AFRICA AS A CONTINENT (DAY 18) # DESERT LANDFORMS

in #wafrica6 years ago (edited)

Desert landforms are formed as a result of powerful erosion. Desert landforms are more evident in the Sahara desert which extends 4800km from the Atlantic shores to the Red Sea coast with a maximum width of 1900km and covers one-quarter of Africa's surface.

Desert landscapes were formed as a result of the changes between the hot furnaces of the day and the freezing conditions at night expand and contract rock surfaces and undoubtedly weaken the rock structure. Sudden cooling by occasional rain showers may cause thick flakes to break off (exfoliation) which are further broken down and their minerals with their different rates of expansion are prised loose. The desert sands are the result

Rain, despite its scarcity, is also an effective erosive agent. Sudden freak rainstorms are very destructive since there is little vegetation to protect the desert surface. WADIS become raging torrents for a few brief minutes and huge amounts of loose sand and stones are removed

Chemical weathering also occurs on the shaded undersides of rocks where dampness is caused by moisture moving to the desert surface from below by capillary action

Resistant rocky massifs form a different class of desert of the landscape. Eg In the fezzan of Libya the scenery is wild and rugged and fades South-Eastwards into the Acacus, an area of sharp limestones cliffs falling steeply towards the west and crisis- crossed and gasted by narrow gorges

More volcanic and crystalline massifs are seen in the Air, Tibesti, and Ahaggar plateaux. These massifs subject to thousands of years of desert erosion have been transformed into a weird lunar landscape of towering pinapples, volcanic plugs, and cones.

Woff, woff!

Hello @nicholasmwanje, Nice to meet you!

I'm a guide dog living in KR community. I can see that you want to contribute to KR community and communicate with other Korean Steemians. I really appreciate it and I'd be more than happy to help.

KR tag is used mainly by Koreans, but we give warm welcome to anyone who wish to use it. I'm here to give you some advice so that your post can be viewed by many more Koreans. I'm a guide dog after all and that's what I do!

Tips:

  • If you're not comfortable to write in Korean, I highly recommend you write your post in English rather than using Google Translate.
Unfortunately, Google Translate is terrible at translating English into Korean. You may think you wrote in perfect Korean, but what KR Steemians read is gibberish. Sorry, even Koreans can't understand your post written in Google-Translated Korean.
  • So, here's what might happen afterward. Your Google-Translated post might be mistaken as a spam so that whales could downvote your post. Yikes! I hope that wouldn't happen to you.
  • If your post is not relevant to Korea, not even vaguely, but you still use KR tag, Whales could think it as a spam and downvote your post. Double yikes!
  • If your post is somebody else's work(that is, plagiarism), then you'll definitely get downvotes.
  • If you keep abusing tags, you may be considered as a spammer. It may result to put you into the blacklist. Oops!

I sincerely hope that you enjoy Steemit without getting downvotes. Because Steemit is a wonderful place. See? Korean Steemians are kind enough to raise a guide dog(that's me) to help you!

Woff, woff! 🐶

"A great day with Steemit
Welcomed a lovely morning with a cup of coffee @goodsteemit
Set the sun up on the eastern horizon with a little smile
Now the day began to approach the night
Nothing more than expected
However, There's no step back a word, stay with us at Steemit @nicholasmwanje
Do not begin to look back, look at your long way forward
With us we fight together."
