Ocular First Aid

Having some basic knowledge in terms of what to do in emergency situations could just be what saves you from a disability or great harm. We watch movies and see people perform different kinds of first aid for people but we may not have really sat down to ask how is down or if we should find ourselves in that situation what we should do, so in this article and my subsequent ones i will be tackling some first aid procedures to help equip us with basic lifesaving skills.

First and foremost you must be prepared for the possibility of an accident occuring, so in your work place stock your first aid kit, use the neccesary protection demanded by your work, safety clothing, googles, etc. Don't assume that an injury is not dangerous, is better safe than sorry, see a doctor if you're in dilemma.

In the case of the eye coming in contact with chemicals flush the area with profuse amount of water. Use flowing water like tap water or shower if available, flushing should be done for abt 15 minutes. Don't cover the eye with bandages, see ur optometrist as soon as possible to assess the extent of injury and to get treated.

If something falls into the eye, do not rub. Reflex tears may be copious enough to bring it out, if not you may use commercial eyewash, if there's still a sensation pf foreign body, see your optometrist for comprehensive assessment, it may be embedded.

Blunt trauma to the eye could be mild or severe however as i already mentioned don't leave anything to chance, apply cold compress gently on the eye. Seek medical attention. Any of these symptoms may be an indicator of a damage, burry vision, protruding eye, seeing blod in vision or black eye.

Should you puncture the eye, don't wash the eye with water, also objects stucked shouldn't be removed, instead try to secure it in place without adding pressure, seek immediate medical attention.
