Resilient Nigerian-Youth Spirit

I would be lying if I said Nigeria was an easy place to live. The vast majority of the population is below the poverty line and we are bereft of basic ammenties like water, electricity, healthcare amongst other infrastructure.

However, today's article isn't one to highlight those faults, but to point out some amazing feats in spite of the difficult environment. It is to recognize the unrelenting spirit of 'Never say die', that has championed the success of these sectors despite the odds.

I want to quickly highlight two industries that have achieved success in spite of the odds. The rise of these industries from virtually nowhere to the helm of affairs in the Nigerian economy today is a testament to the zeal, passion and hunger to succeed by the average Nigerian Youth.

These industries - entertainment and technology, are the perfect example of what happens when determined and talented young people come together to create.

Nollywood from its early days has grown in leaps and bounds to where it stands today. It started from virtually nothing at the crash of the Nigerian economy in the 80s, which led to a death of cinema culture and a reduction in original foreign film consumption. Noticing the opportunity to fill the gap with a cheaper alternative, the production of local movies started despite being underfunded and unappreciated. While I may need a whole article to talk about this, bottom line is that Nollywood today is the largest entertainment market in Africa, and gradually penetrating the World stage.

Fairly new is the technological sector, propelled by a growing mobile culture. Players such as Iroko, Farmcrowdy, Piggybank, Flutterwave and many others have managed to attract the growth they desire solely by hardwork and meritocracy. The Technology sector that started with virtually nothing is now one of the fastest growing in terms of job creation and per Capita income.

Imagine what we could achieve with the right kind of support and encouragement. All hail the Nigerian Youth.
