Occulus Go - Ready for Prime Time
Oculus Go is a stand alone virtual reality headset. It’s not for gamers or folks experienced with high tech controllers. It can be clunky, and at times slow. Navigating thru its apps can be frustrating at first. But with patience and for a low budget be prepared to be engaged.
The truth is out there.
Oculus Go doesn't let you walk around in its virtual world. Not yet. It won’t let you pick up a virtual object or tap a virtual stranger on the shoulder. Not yet. But it will engage your body and a good portion of your soul with a reasonably detailed 3D, 360 degree moving image. It's worth the price.
You will need patience. The menu system will seem strange. It’s not always obvious how to use a hand controller. (What is a hand controller, anyway? And how is it even supposed to work?)
But give it time. Try it out. Your experience will be rewarded. Although nothing in the virtual world may seem obvious at first, it’s worth getting over the learning curve.
Full disclosure: I’m not a gamer. The kind of experiences I prefer are emotional connections to the human condition. Oculus Go can do that.
How? This new technology encourages you to move to connect with content. If produced your mind will process megabits of information. With 3D images your visual cortex will lock on to virtual space. Such engagement fuels emotion. To feel is to get real.
You will wish for better wifi. You will lust for a sharper screen. You will dream of a full blown virtual space of your own. Oculus Go can’t give you that. Not yet. But it will give you an experience worth the price of admission.
My recommendation is this: get an Oculus Go and know the small miracle that it already is.
Open a window to your soul.
