Volusion Stores are Ready for the Paypal TLS 1.2 Update

You may have recently seen messaging on PayPal’s website, or received communications regarding their upgrade to TLS1.2 and HTTP/1.1. We want to keep you in the loop and help you understand what this means for you as a Volusion customer.

According to PayPal, “Before June 30, 2018, PayPal is requiring all merchants to upgrade their security protocols to TLS 1.2, in line with the PCI mandate, and make the other required security upgrades. At that time, merchants will no longer be able to accept payments with PayPal until they make the necessary upgrades.” More info can be found on their website here.

What is TLS 1.2?

TLS (Transport Layer Security) 1.2 is the latest iteration of a cryptographic protocol that has become an industry standard in protecting private data as it is transmitted between two interacting applications. In a nutshell, it’s a way to keep your online data safe as it moves around the web.

What is Volusion doing/ what have we done to comply with this deadline?

We’ve tested TLS connections for PayPal Standard, PayPal Express, and our PayPal Express Upgrade and have passed all tests with flying colors.

We’ve been serving TLS 1.1 and 1.2 for a while now. If you run your store domain through an SSL checker server, such as SSLLabs.com, it will show that we serve secure connections over TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 per the PCI-DSS requirements.

We’ve been working directly with PayPal to ensure that all of our connections continue to meet their standards.

What does this update mean for me?

As a Volusion customer, you’re covered. We’ve worked directly with our PayPal partners to ensure that our platforms will continue to operate together under their new security standards.

However, if you have received direct contact from PayPal regarding your connections not being compliant, PayPal has recommended that you contact them to locate where they are receiving these transactions from.

We hope this has answered any questions you had about these changes, and that we’ve helped to put your mind at ease. As always, feel free to reach out to our Support team if you have any further questions.
