FREE MEDICAL SCREENING TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BETTER GHANA

in #volunteer6 years ago (edited)

Since I was a kid, it was always been a dreamed to help humanity in my own small way and this desire drove me into the field of science and by the grace of God am currently reading Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science in the University for Development Studies. Due to this great desire nurtured in me since I was a kid, I was so much pleased when I was informed about being part of a free Blood screening to be rendered to the community to which the school is situated. I spared no time in affirming the called.

The Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science Association department of my school spared headed the free Blood screening for the community called Dungu Community. The screening was carried out on the 14th of February 2018 which we all know was Valentine day and we as an association decided to spend this day by volunteering to under take a free Blood screening during our week celebration.

This is myself standing with the lab coat on my hand.

The screening commenced at 10am and ended at 1pm. We first of all commenced the screening by taking the people through a health talk which was conducted by the president of the association and because most of them didn't understand English language, we had one student of ours to translate whatever was being said to them. We first educated them on the need to maintain good health and also advice them on drug intake. We then proceeded to educate them on the various test that we would be screening them for and also we reemphasize on the dangers of those disease we were to screen them for and the effects the disease could pose when not detected early.

This is @muhammadalikatu and myself registering the people and @wumpini-lagfu behind us.

The various disease we were screening for we're hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. We also checked the blood groups of the females. The community members were actually delighted that we were screening all those disease mentioned above for free because they are quite expensive when one goes to test for those diseases.

After we were done with the health talk, we immediately proceeded with the screening process. The screening process started with the registration of the members of the community who were present. The males were registered separately from the females. I was privileged to one of the students registering the people and it was with soo much delight and enthusiasm I used in carrying it out.

That's a few of us on the table trying to organize things

Some of our colleagues helped organise the people and the few that were left took the blood sample if the people. Even though it was a hectic exercise I enjoyed every bit of it. When we had successfully completed the screening process, we had an attendance of 22 males and 48 females in all 70 community members showed up for the exercise. Some had left for work and as a result could not make it for the screening process.

Meet the team that made the free medical screening possible

We were Soo glad the screening process went on successfully and we are hoping to do more of this free Blood screening in the coming years. It felt really good rendering service to humanity and am hoping to do more voluntary work.
