Towards Voluntaryism (Part 13)

As a member of the faculty your options are, in certain regards, more constrained than students or members of the general public. As we have seen in recent years, even tenure is no guarantee that a dissenting opinion will not be punished with dismissal, not to mention the possible internal reprisals and social tensions that departing from the groupthink can cause in the current educational environment.

  • 3A. Become a member of the University Senate (in my experience, most professors duck non-academic responsibility and achieving a seat in the University Senate is not too difficult as it is largely a thankless bureaucratic task).

  • 3B. Volunteer for duties regarding the curriculum and student affairs. Yes it means more responsibility, it also means more influence.

  • 3C. Try to get appointed to any hiring committees and advocate hiring the best qualified applicant in a meritocratic and academic sense regardless of their race, sex, gender, political orientation etc. Record / protocol any speech or behavior that advocates a hire based on anything other than actual academic competence and merit.

  • 3D. Network with like-minded scholars. Consider joining the Heterodox Academy.

  • 3E. As a personal aside, I would advise against engaging with postmodern hyper-relativist liberal arts scholars academically unless it is in the context of quantifiable data (interdisciplinary pursuits). Postmodern relativism is largely anti-science and any cooperation with this approach will ultimately undermine the authority and validity of your own research, if not today, in the future when current trends have run their course. Ultimately, "the truth is what we say/agree/believe it is" is contrary to the western scientific tradition which will outlive this subjectivist trend. True scholarship is an act for posterity, do not make yourself irrelevant in the future for the easy road today that will sully you long term. Alternately, directly engage with the postmodern subjectivists by hosting public interdisciplinary events in which the relativist social construction of truth must defend itself in the face of the natural sciences, logic and the scientific method (see Jordan Patterson).

  • 3F. Familiarize yourself with the Frankfurter School of Critical Theory, The Yale School and the general relativism of the postmodern movement in the liberal arts and sciences so that you can recognize (post)modern forms of academic sophistry. Some of my writings may assist you.

  • 3G. If possible, get on the Board of Trustees or Regents to affect more significant change. This may necessitate establishing a working relationship with the governor of your state or the state legislature.

  • 3H. Review the lists "What Can I Do as a Member of the General Public" and "What Can I do as A Member of the Student Body?" and be creative.

  • 3I. Collaborate and cooperate with like-minded students and members of the public.

  • 3.J. Be emotionally and legally prepared for the career consequences of swimming against the current social justice culture of non-meritocratic diversity enforcement and racist, sexist discrimination and privileging of certain identity groups over others.

  • 3.K. Record everything relevant that you can. Document everything. Protocol everything.

  • 3.L. Finally, you know your environment the best. If you have been in the university environment long enough, you know the politics and diplomacy necessary to survive, use your best judgment.

  • 3.M. If you are tenured and less than 5 years from retirement, now is the time to make a difference. If you get fired or mobbed out of your job, the settlement for breaking your contract and emotional and reputational damage may be a nice golden parachute. What do you have to lose? What are the costs to the educational mission if you do nothing?
