Mayon: The legend, tale and eruption
Legend has it that in a place called Ibalon, a very beautiful maiden named Magayon lived. She is the daughter of the tribal chief Makusog. Her beauty captivates so many men that they had to leave their hometowns just to see her.
Pagtuga, a warrior and the chief of Iraga, was one of his suitors. Although Magayon was not moved by his actions, he constantly send gifts, jewels and golds to show his intentions.
One day, Magayon went to take a bath in Yawa river. She slipped on one of the rocks and asked for help. Pangaronon was passing by the river, heard the cry and saved her from drowning. Their love story began until he asked for Magayon's hand in marriage.
The news spread widely and Pagtuga heard about it. He kidnapped Magayon's father, Makusog, and threatened her that he would kill him if she won't agree to marry her. So, she agreed.
Pangaronon crashed into the wedding. He battled against Pagtuga and was able to struck him. But, when the lovers are about to embrace each other, a poisoned arrow struck Magayon and one of Pagtuga's soldier stabbed him.
The chief decided to bury Magayon and Pangaronon together. As years passed by, the land where they're buried began to rise and is known as the Mayon volcano.
Today, the Mayon volacano erupts, continues to spew out lave and degas. Thousands of residents have evacuated from the danger zone.
