Vlog: Culture: Friend or Foe? Is It Serving the People? Wage Slavery, Rigid Beauty Standards, etc ~ Where Is the Nourishment?
Hey Steemians,
Ini and I were talking about culture and decided to make a vlog.
In past posts, we've analyzed culture, asking what it is, etc. Today, we didn't analyze it, but asked some questions about our relationship with it.
One thing that's been on my mind lately is NOURISHMENT, and I have been following the sources of nourishment and noticing where it also doesn't come from. I don't find nourishment in the culture. To me, it seems like a set of expectations or guidelines that are actually quite stifling to the creative spirit and do not feed. Wage slavery, enforced beauty standards, and so much more! All of these voices that seek to undermine our self worth...
Obviously we've taken the rather drastic step of extricating ourselves from the Culture (large C) and set off to create, with friends and community, our own culture(s).
When doing this, there is always a give in take. Ways we cannot step away fully from the Culture, ways the norms and guidelines still echo in our ears or come up from within like programming, or practical things like using gas or money.
I wont go through what's in the entire video as I do want to invite you to watch it, but these are a few things we covered.
What about you? Where are your sources of nourishment and is the culture one of them?
Also, do you like the music in the background? Trying a new thing!

I suspect the more uncomfortable the mainstream culture becomes the more people will leave it to begin new cultures. A lot of people on Steem fit that category.
I liked your music selection. I barely noticed it yet it added energy to the video. I usually don't like music in videos because it can become distracting, but it's actually an enhancement when handled wisely.
i think you're spot on @cahlen. steemit is a good example of many people who believe different realities are possible.
thanks for the feedback about the music selection! that's the goal, to energize, not overwhelm. :)
Well said, so wise you are! Thank you for sharing!
xoxo love you!!! learn from the best ;)
Excellent. Being a part of a nurturing culture does help us grow. I want to be a part of a culture that has positive social pressure, not coercive pressure to conform to a pattern that is harmful.
I do believe with all of my heart that this is a dress rehearsal for the real thing, because I believe there is MUCH more to come after out bodies are nothing but dirt. We may be slaves in the flesh and we can feel liberated at times, but our real freedom is yet to come. Knowing this is extremely comforting to me.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this enjoyable video. @ironshield
Yes, I agree, wonderful video, more to come!
fantastic sentence. you really hit it on the mark!
totally, the Beyond This is coming next and you're right, it will likely be so awesome!! i'm more referring to the Living Life to the fullest here... and not letting our fears stop us.. why wait for Heaven or the afterlife to do that? Live out our dreams here, too :)
Great video. I loved the subject.
Culture is what we have constructed from the material of the past. In a sense, it is no longer alive. So culture isn't 'bad' so much as it is always in a state of death and decay.
It serves us only in so much as it allows the individual freedom to regenerate and revivify that which is dead and decaying, and bring new life to it. If culture stifles the individual, then it destroys itself.
yeah interesting thoughts!! i think the modern culture definitely stifles and "locks us in" to rigid norms that don't really serve us. let it die!! good comment on death and what gives life ;)
I just got a gift!!! ;)
