Almost as strange as talking with a time traveling cat ;) That’s the thing about us cats no one ever consider that they think aliens.
Oh I’m sure they talking with him to see if they will be billing him for the search and rescue costs.
If you go missing and they are tracking your payment history all you got do is go buy a $1 candy bar and they know something is up. Who has the kind of money just to buy an entire iPhone. I assume it was not with cash.
If I ever party that hard and don’t recall a weeks’ worth of time I’ll consider that a blessing!

I never thought about the possibility of him taking some good drugs.
However, it DOES seem he didn't spend anything OR get out of the big-rig during his journey, so I don't think they'll charge him for S&R.
Seems possible if it wasn't aliens... that it was the government... but why? 🤔
This guy was either kidnaped and for whatever reason was just left. Really did suffer a brain injury from bumping his head and stowed away in back of a semi-truck that had water on it.
Or this person is just nuts and planed the whole thing from the start in hopes to get his 10 minutes of fame.
For all we know this person worked for or has some kind of involvement with government. When he went missing they used this as a cover story to try and find him.
It seems like some sort of kidnapping. I mean, WHY would he call his wife if he was running away?
Your last suggestion seems likely. He knew something he shouldn't... and now he doesn't. 😲
