Vlog Tips // Connecting Authentically with your Audience
Hello Friends!
I was being interviewed earlier today by IJ (@steemcafe) as part of his interview series. That interview should be posted within the next week or so - but IJ said something that has really stuck with me the rest of the day.
He mentioned that people really seem to connect with me because of how authentic I feel on camera. This really meant a lot to me and made me realize that this is something i've kind of subconsciously worked on. I know it sounds weird... I mean either you are authentic or not, right??
I actually think there are some topics and mindset shifts that we can discuss that may help someone who is struggling with this.
What does struggling with this look like?
- Too buttoned up and professional feeling
- The feeling of distance or barriers. Basically, you hear what they are saying, but you don’t feel like you are getting to know them better
- Nervous sounding - either by pace, filler words or pitch
In this video I discuss actionable items for each topic and ways that you can shift your mindset to improve your camera presence.
One of the tips I give is to find phrases that help you embody the feeling of what you are trying to do and to literally tape it below your camera! I share what my phrase was during the interview I had with IJ earlier today!
I hope you guys enjoy this vlog and found these topics helpful!
If you have any thoughts or questions on how to relax and feel more comfortable on camera - please let me know!
xo, Lea

Hey there @coruscate Thank you. And you're right; I am a great interviewer. hahaha
It was an absolute pleasure to speak with you. The crew & I are so grateful to have you part of the team.
Yep, you're on it! I say umm a lot, mainly cause I just turn the camera on at the moment and try to make sure I don't repeat the same thing 5 times in the same video haha.
You are easy to engage with! Love the authenticity.
Aw thanks Kevin! That means a lot to me. Breaking the habit of using filler words can be really tough, but awareness is the first step! 😊
Yes, authenticity is so important and you do it so well! That's definitely one of the main things that drew me to your channel and keeps me coming back :) Looking forward to doing some Vlogging myself sometime soon so will definitely try out your tips!
Aww your comment means a lot to me! Great to hear that you are going to start vlogging soon!! It is actually pretty fun once you get going with it. Even in terms of connecting with audience - video can be a lot more powerful than just text.
Sheesh...stop being so nervous, Lea.....
:D
:D
Yeah I like your vlogs because it feels like we're just having a conversation.
Solid
Thanks for the great feedback @dnews! I’m so glad to hear that your feeling that vibe through the videos. 😊
Hi @coruscate, greetings from NIGERIA
I think this is like your third video I'm watching and I must say I've never regretted doing so.
I feel like I'm connecting with you while waiting your videos because of how calm and peaceful you are when talking.
This tips have gone a long way for me, so thank you.
I'm actually thinking of starting my own vlog very soon and I sure would apply these tips.
But I have a question and I don't mean to be a bother @coruscate but would you mind explaining or maybe doing a video on how to edit videos before posting it, because I would really love to know about that as im new to this vlogging thing and it would help me when I want to do mine.
Thanks so much again.
Cheers💜
Thanks for your questions @kwinesther! How you edit your videos will really depend on what device you are using to film. For me, I film on my iPhone, and so I just use IMovie. If you are filming on a camera though, you will need to upload the video to your computer and then edit it. If you have a Mac - then you get iMovie for free. If you are using a windows device, you’ll need to get some kind of video editing software.
I hope that makes sense! How videos are editing really depends on what equipment you are using.
Thank you very much @coruscate.
This response is really helpful.
P.S thanks for the early reply, you are always on point👌
Cheers💜
Getting connected with you is really one of the key reasons why I have been upvoting all your posts. If you ever take a look when I first started to know you, I did not really give 100% full vote when I first get to know you. My upvote percentage slowly increased and presently it is 100% that is really my full support for you. You are one of the two vocal artists that I am giving 100% upvotes for every post. I am rationale in proportioning my voting power so that I don't fall too low. Glad to have got connected with you!
I have noticed that, and your support means so much to me. I’m honored that I’m one of the few people you’ve decided to upvote 100%. I totally get needed to guard your overall vote power - I try not to get below a certain point as well.
I’m so glad we’ve found each other here on the platform because it’s been awesome getting to know you better through all of our chats in the comments! Steem on!
Good tips for sure. I do my best to pretend I'm delivering my message to someone face to face. It helps me to stay on track because I won't drift away for more than a few seconds, before acknowledging the camera or what has been said.
When you treat it as a real conversation between you and the viewers, you don't feel as though you have to act. This can allow you to relax, let your thoughts flow naturally, and be your true self.
Awesome tips about just pretending it is a casual conversation. This can be hard to do, but really does make a video feel more natural and comfortable like you said.
Ps... I saw your comment on Sara Millers post about originally being from Vegas. You should totally come out to the Creators conference with us! It’s going to be such a crazy, awesome weekend.
You're right! Authenticity is key to this entire Dtube process. By being yourself you make it so your audience can connect on a personal level. When watching your videos I 100% feel that from you as well! :)
Aww thanks for the feedback! That really means a lot to me. 😊 I’m also really glad that you found this topic to be helpful /relevant.
This was so helpful. I hope to start doing videos very soon, Thanks so much. Love your energy!
Aww thank you for your thoughtful response! Awesome to hear that you are going to start doing video content soon too! I think it is one of the best ways to both share and consume content. If you are comfortable enough to get in front of a camera and talk - then that gives you a big advantage in terms of content creation because so many people would rather eat a slug than talk on camera! haha
Nice tips...really worthwhile for me...
