What is a digital asset and why is Vleppo needed? - Part 1

If you were to check Wikipedia a Digital Asset “in essence, is anything that exists in a binary format and comes with the right to use. Data that do not possess that right are not considered assets”. While this definition is strictly speaking correct, it understates the complexity of the world of digital assets.

If we go more into depth there are 3 key elements that make any single file a digital asset.

A digital asset must:

  • Be a digital file.

  • Provide value to the holder.

  • Be searchable and discoverable (usually with metadata).

In Vleppo’s case we are not talking only about single files but rather a very diverse and rapidly growing universe of digitals assets that are being circulated on the web.

These assets, while high profile, are a relatively insignificant fraction of the universe of Digital Assets out there in the digital landscape. Vleppo refers to these other assets as ‘Unlisted Digital Assets’ because they are not listed on any exchange with a readily identifiable market value.

These include:

  • Digital Content (e.g. images, music, video, brands, books etc.)

  • User Profiles (e.g. Various Instagram accounts)

  • Data Packages (e.g Big Data collections)

  • Domain Names (e.g. various domains that are indexed into search engines)

At first glance the value contained within these Unlisted Digital Assets is not immediately apparent however the Vleppo team has spent considerable time analysing this sector of the digital landscape and have determined two guiding principles that establish value:

  1. Can the digital ‘asset’ be sold for a monetary value; and

  2. Can property rights for the digital ‘asset’ be established such that use of the item can be restricted or made exclusive.

When one applies these principles to Unlisted Digital Assets it becomes obvious that there is abundant value contained within the majority of such assets. Another interesting feature is the extreme difficulty associated with unlocking and monetising this value for the purposes of working capital.

Vleppo’s unique approach to this problem enables it to be able to unlock the value for holders of both Listed and Unlisted Digital Assets through the application of its ‘Market of Markets’ framework.

So then, the remaining question that lingers is ‘what sort of use cases support Vleppo’s approach and demonstrate potential demand for credit associated with Digital Assets’.

We will explore that in Part 2.
