Survival Life in West Virginia
West Virginia is a place that truly tests your survival skill since the climate there tends to be quite cold and needs a serious amount of preparation before departing or else you will find yourself struggling to just find water.West Virginia has had chemical pollution in the Elk River so it is advised you take some commercial filters with you so that can remove some of the chemicals in the water but keep in mind that you can not remove all of the chemicals so here is a few alternatives that you can try out.
Chemical Treatment: Another way of purifying water instead of slurping it up like a drink from a filter straw is to use chemicals to treat the water polluted with chemicals. To make things clearer, this is all scientifically proven and will treat unclean water.Iodine, Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Chlorite, Potassium Permanganate, and household bleach! Some of the chemicals I have just told you are already sold as tablets to hikers as water purifiers! They are easy to use and easy to carry! Definitely, a must need in survival life.
Boiling: The oldest trick in the book(it’s not even the matter of your knowing or not, it’s that you should already know about this method)You need two simple things to start this process, one of it is even available in the wide and vast nature! Wood! And the other thing you need would be a container to place your liquid in.The hard part of boiling would be to stabilize your container on top of the fire or in the fire and one mistake will cause you your precious drinking water.
Soil/Sand Filter: It is unbelievable to think that you can filter water by using sand! It’s like using coal as your sharpening stone. The Knife might get sharpened but there will be a side effect which is the knife being blackened. It’s the same thing with using soil/sand filter. You might get the water filtered but the water might get more microorganisms as a result. To start making a Soil /Sand Filter you would need an empty plastic bottle and fill it with different kinds of sand since different sands have their own properties but that would be an entirely different blog:D.After filling the bottle with soil, tie a piece of cloth to the neck of the bottle and make sure to cover the opening. After that, you will need to cut the bottom part of the bottle and turn it upside down so that the soils will not topple over wasting all your efforts! And you can start using your filter!Make sure to filter the water until it starts to become clear.
Solar Still/Distilling: Dig a hole in and make sure it is at least three times the size of your container, you will need two containers for this job one is for the contaminated water and the other one is to collect the water.First, place the two containers in the hole.Use a plastic sheet to cover the hole and secure it in place by placing heavy objects on top of the plastic sheet.Lastly, place a rock on top of the collecting container so that the evaporated water will condense and land on top of the collecting container.Be very peculiar about this!*be wary of the black bears!
