Just Finished 'THE LAST GUARDIAN' on the PS4 - My thoughts.
So, if you have been out of the loop of games, and/or aren't a gamer at all, let me fill you in. The Last Guardian has been coming out for years, years. They first were coming out on the PS3 and scrapped it and started over for the PS4.
It's been hyped up, and when it finally came out, I was stoked to get it. I just happen to have a daughter that keeps me busy as well as numerous other things. So yeah, I'm late to review this game.
The plot of this game is really touching, and if you are animal lover at all, you'd probably shed some tears. The story starts as a young boy wakes up next to an angry dragon dog looking thing. They call it Trico.
Trico is hurt and unable to move much, so basically the boy nurses him back to health.
Trico then becomes friends with this boy, and their relationship gets stronger as you move through the game. The two are trying to escape from what seems to be a futuristic, yet ancient city - imagine alien beings building a city in ancient Egypt. The city has a main building you are trying to get too. It's the tallest and the only way Trico could possibly fly out as his wings are damaged, or badly hurt. As you travel to this main building you are fighting off soliders that seemed to be possessed or moving by energy. Removing their heads will kill them or having Trico do some heavy damage seems to work well. Sounds like zombies, don't they.
Later we're revealed about how the boy and Trico came to be. We also learn there are many more Tricos out there, and they are controlled by wearing these caps. Needless, to say, I really enjoyed the story.
The game is not at all a fighting game, but there is a repetitive theme of puzzles, and letting Trico kill soldiers. The two characters rely on each other greatly to get through the puzzles. Some times, Trico's height or ability to jump is what's needed, and sometimes the young boy needs to fit through smaller areas to unlock doors etc. The boy can't fight the soldiers, so you spend a lot of time running, getting caught and mashing a bunch of buttons.
So the game lacks heavily in it's repetitive puzzles. More than often, it's a lever that needs to be pulled. However, there were some puzzles that seemed to get me stuck as Trico would need to be in the perfect position to work.
I loved the visuals, the color scheme, but there were a few times the graphics were seriously lacking. It happened to be more towards the end. It wasn't enough to discourage me from enjoying it, but it was noticeable.
One problem for me, was I was so frustrated commanding Trico, and having him do exactly the opposite that I was glad to be on foot running on my own. So for me, it took away a lot of that connection the two were supposed to have.
The best part of the game for me, was the climatic ending. Once getting into that building, it was really cool! The building was icy cold, and glowed...very alienish. Loved it.
Overall, I give the game 7/10.
I just needed it to run more smoothly to not be annoyed at Trico. I suppose a real animal would be very much the same, but in reality, I'm not sure how much of a connection would be there without the trust and growing together. It could have been cool do do coop and having the players work together. What would have been even more cool, is having the languages not make sense to each player, but by the end of the game, they could listen more clearly.
