Roza Eskinazi, The Queen of Rembetiko Music
If you open any book in the genre of World Music, one name that comes up again and again, is the Greek Rembetiko singer : Rosa Eskinazi. Roza is considered one of the world's best female singers and musicians. Born into a poor Istanbul Sephardi Jewish family. Despite opposition from her mother who wanted her to be more "respectable," Roza forged her own path.
She sang about "love" and relationships when it was clearly not acceptable for women to do so. If you have never heard of Roza or the beauty and sensuality of Rembetiko, here are some examples of her powerful and long-lasting work. She sang mostly in Greek but also in Turkish:
Χόρεψε μου τσιφτετέλι - "Khoropse mou Tsifteteli " (Dance for me with a cigarette)
Τράβα ρε αλάνη - "Trava Me Alani" (Trava with Alan)
Eminem (Turkish) - (My Emine)
