Big Walker Mountain Tunnel, Bland, VA
Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is 4,229-foot long tunnel that carries Interstate 77 traffic though the Appalachian Mountains under Big Walker Mountain.
After five years of construction it opened in 1972. It cost $50 million to complete, at today's money adjusted to 2019, Inflation it would put it at $378,407,185.63.
The tunnel reduced the travel time by 30 minutes. It is located a few miles south of the town of Bland. To the North 20 miles its longer cousin, the East River Mountain Tunnel.
They drilled from both sides of Big Walker Mountain and they met in the middle. Lets look at that old clip.
This tunnel has Sixty PTZ Cameras that can pan, tilt, and zoom. Traffic Signals, and Message Signs located along the roadside are controlled by operators in the tunnel control which aids them in monitoring and managing traffic conditions. They shares its data with Virginia Department of Transportation. Eventually these systems will be connected with the East River Mountain Tunnel. To help with fire fighting they have two 30,000 gallon under-ground tanks for water.
