Vermicomposting, bin choices.

Lots of choices out there today for worm bins. I have tried several types of these some with success and some without. The cheapest option and most effective for me was the tote containers. I like the brute containers even though they are a little on the higher price side of totes and the reason why is the handles hold the top bin several inches above the bottom bin allowing for a nice size space for drainage into the bottom bin at the same time allowing a good amount of space for holes on the top for air flow. Best air flow will always be no lid but these bins work well for people that prefer a lid. The biggest problem with these style home made worm bins is they are not a flow thru style bin and they are not long enough to use the migration techniques to harvest castings. These means you are stuck doing the labor of and sorting out the worms from the castings as the downside. I have several 55 gal fish tanks that I use the same but they are long enough to allow for the worms to migrate to one side before harvesting.

The new kid on the block has turned into one of my favorite bins, The Urban Worm Bag. I never really cared for tray stacking systems due to the size of the trays but now for the same price point you can get The Urban Worm Bag. This is a very nice quality hanging bag system that fixed everything about hanging systems I did not like. First is it does not dry out like most hanging bags made from material and it also comes with a nice metal frame instead of plastic or no frame at all. My favorite things are that it has a quality zipper on the lid allowing me to close it up without worms escaping and still getting good air flow. This feature makes the Urban Worm Bag perfect for blue worms along with the flow thru capabilities that cut back on labor of sorting worms from your castings. Best bin for your buck in my opinion is The Urban Worm Bag.

My next bin I am going to talk about is the Worm Wigwam. These are larger home CFT bin and one of the smallest size commercial bins. They are a round 3 ft by 3 ft by 3ft CFT. I have three of these functioning right now and they are fantastic bins. They are a little on the higher price side of home worm bins but for the amount of production in the amount of space they take it is hard to beat. You could buy several smaller bins that would produce the same as a Wigwam but it will end up costing you almost the same for several smaller bins, take up more space and require more work and attention for multiple bins instead of one larger CFT. The exception to this could be The Urban Worm Bag due to it's low price point. They would still take more space and more time to deal with many units but could be mounted on a hanging system to take up space that is dead space not being used instead of floor space.

Like I said there are lots of options out there and these are just 3 options in different price points and these are my opinions of them. What type of bins do you prefer?
