I think lithium-ion technology (and batteries in general) is more promising for cars. While the cost price and environmental impact are much lower, the benefits of hydrogen cars are not very important for most automobile users. For airplanes, high energy density can be a big advantage, but the high cost price can also be a stumbling block.
There are cars running on hydrogen. For clarity: the policy is the same. However, separation takes place elsewhere. So you're tanking hydrogen, not water.
Both have great advantages as well as very big disadvantages. The biggest drawback I have mentioned above is that it consumes a lot of energy to produce. Really very inefficient. The advantages are also worth it: Hydrogen has a very high energy density and the tank can be filled much faster than a battery is charged.
The inefficiency of hydrogen as a source of energy is not only due to the inefficiency of the electrolysis (not bad in itself), but also because of the high energy density, the compression or cooling required for transport
