Indian Grocery Store Haul (Vegan)

in #vegan9 years ago (edited)

Good afternoon, Steemians!

I want to share what I got my first time ever being in an Indian grocery store. It was pretty cool, they tons of spices and odd things I'd never seen before.

I asked the guy what his best deal on rice was. He pointed me in the direction of a BOGO 10 lb. bag of basmati rice. It was $20 for 20 lbs, coming out to around 6 cents per ounce. That beats out any supermarket rice I've seen.

I haven't had dates in a while so I got a big thing of them. I got these bread/cracker things called punjabi which are good. I also got a bag of cumin seeds, fennel seeds, Garam Masala (a mix of many spices), and some red pepper chili powder.

We went to India palace last night, and the food was so good that I wanted to start learning how to cook some of our favorite vegan Indian dishes from there.

We have okra, cauliflower, and cilantro already so maybe we could make Bhindi or Aloo Gobi from last night. What I like about making the meals at home is that we can control the spiciness and it's much cheaper to cook at home.

Thanks for stopping by!

WOW, great discovery👍! Where do you live and where is this India palace? It amazes me that despite it's your first time with Indian food, you know their Indian names like bhindi & aloo gobhi 😊 🙂! By the way, okra & bhindi are the same, bhindi being the Hindi for okra. And what do you call that papad packet placed in the centre of the picture? Okay, that bread/cracker thing is called punjabi there ...I'm learning.😎

Hehe well I'm a Spanish teacher, so I'm very quick to learn new culture and diet!

Brilliant! You are very talented. Good to connect with you. 😊

Thank you :) You too!

Basmati rice is all we use in my house :D

:) I usually cook Jasmine rice, but love Basmati as well :)

Niiice, basmati rice is the best too! I also used to make Garam Masala curry all the time. Wonder if I still have that kicking around.

:) I'm probably going to use a little less oil than they do at the restaurants, it seems like overkill.
