RE: Abundantly Grateful for a Full January! {Meditation, Food, and the Promise of a Spring Garden}

Never heard of this "romanesco" before but it looks like something a Vulcan would be eating... all fractal as you called it.
I've heard of Kohlrabi, but I don't know what it is nor what to do with it.
Very interesting.
Great stuff @plantstoplanks.
So you have a 4 yr old whose B'day is tomorrow?
My mother was born on 2/1/1916, so tomorrow she would have been 104!
Imagine that!

Haha, it really probably would be something they'd eat in outer space. ;) Kohlrabi is one of my faves. The skin is a little thick, but once you cut off the outer layer the inside is nice and crispy. It's got a texture kind of like an apple, but with a nice mild flavor. It works really well in a slaw or just cut up raw to dip in some hummus or guacamole, but it can also be used in soups or roasted with other veggies.

My niece's birthday party is today! Her actual birthday is a few days away, but we'll happily celebrate a few days early. Some great people I know born in February! Kind of neat that your mom was born almost exactly 100 years earlier than my niece. Nice to honor her memory today. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the explanations @plantstoplanks I wonder could Kohlrabi be deepfried?
Probably not the most healthy way to prepare it, but I wonder if it might be a more healthy alternative to french fried potatoes?

This is me and my Mama, probably around 1979

Well look at that, https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/12350-kohlrabi-home-fries. I see some baked options as well. I've never made fries out of them, but might have to give it a try! Especially if any of the big ones grow well for us!

Lovely photo! 💚

Let me know how they turn out. Can you buy Kohlrabi around Atlanta?
(you DO live here, right @plantstoplanks?)

Yes to both. You can usually find it in most stores, well, not the monster variety but the regular type. I think I've seen it in Kroger and Publix, as well as Whole Foods of course. I would imagine the international markets would have it, too!

I just got back from the LARGE Kroger where I normally go. I asked the Produce Guy if they had any Kohlrabi @plantstoplanks.
He said they did not. They sometimes carry it, but for the most part it just sits on the shelf until it must be disposed of.
BUT
He said he would order some for me, it will be on the shelf this coming Tuesday.

Ahh, yeah, I think a lot of people aren't familiar with it so I suppose I can see why it is not a "hot" item. That's so nice that they are getting some in for you, though! Let me know what you think when you get it. :)

You gotta help me with some suggestions for using it. I don't think my slicer device will handle what I've seen in your post. But I can make do I think.
I am loathe to use my oven because of the energy use; it takes so long to get up to a working temp.
I don't have a deep fryer. I love crunchy things in a salad, but alas I don't eat them that often.
I bought some "Leaf lettuce" about a week ago, tomatoes and onion. Radishes too, but I had a salad last night, the radishes had all gone limp, so I ate them all.

I will have to look at Kroger then, I go to the one on South Cobb, which is large with an equally larger produce section.
Thanks @plantstoplanks
