Vegan Domino's Pizza Hack

in #vegan7 years ago (edited)

Basically, you can add your own cheese at home, and then stick it in the oven.

Most chains have at least one crust and one sauce that's vegan. So if you don't mind a cheeseless pizza or don't mind adding your own non-dairy cheese at home, you can order from Domino's and Pizza Hut and all that.

My only thing is I'm not gonna pay like $18 for it. Chain pizza isn't cheap when you just order off the menu. But usually you can find a coupon code or something.

Yesterday Domino's was running a "carryout special" -- Large 2-topping pizzas for $5.99. Perfect, sold.

To my chagrin, they cut it into a bunch of little squares instead of normal pizza slices.

It had been a while since I'd eaten from Domino's, but ya, I think this is just what they do with their thin crust.

I'm fine with it (I'm not a "triangle slice purist" or anything), except now it seemed more tedious to add cheese and transfer it to the oven.

I topped it with Follow Your Heart Gouda, and while I was going thru the process of moving it square by square to the baking pan, I got frisky and fried up a Gardein flishless filet.

I sprinkled the pizza with nutritional yeast, added the sliced up filet, and (my best move of the night) drizzled the olive oil that the filet had fried in.

And then I stuck it in the oven and pulled it out.

It was good!

I stand by the idea that I wouldn't pay like $18 for basically crust and sauce. BUT, for $5.99 (plus the cost of the ingredients I added myself), it seems a hair or two cheaper than buying a frozen vegan pizza. And it was better than those, imo.

Improvements for next time:

(1) I'll definitely use a more melty cheez, like a shredded mozzarella or provolone (this Gouda is good, and melts perfectly fine in things like mac n cheez, but tends to hold its form when you try to melt it as a layer on top -- plus it's not exactly the flavor you want on pizza, and so I was reluctant to cover it with a full layer).

(2) The fishless filet was worth doing, especially since it drew me into drizzling the olive oil on top. But I'll take a salami-less salami or a bacon-less bacon, please and thank you very much.

(3) I'll request that they cut the pizza the normal way into triangles 🤪

Huh interesting.
As a New Yorker I probably eat more dominos than I would like to admit, so I kind of know the ins and outs of dominos. But I didn't know this! Lol
Definitely going to try this when I do take being vegan more serious since I'm always around people who love eating pizza.
Anyway, they usually have a 5.99 each for 2+ items but I doubt you need that much vegan pizza at once if its just for you lol

Ya!! it was for me and @kitzchris we each got our own pizza lul .. so totally coulda done the 2 item deal .. I think that deal is a medium pizza (maybe 3 toppings instead of 2?) .. lol I guess I know more than I'd like to admit about Domino's too .... but I saw the large and I was like hellll ya 😋

have fun if you do ever try it!!

That is quite the creation. Any Italian would be proud of that olive oil and fish filet addition.

Context, I have used Brewers Yeast for a while but I am not crazy about the taste. Question, how cheesy flavored is that yeast seasoning?

Hmm. Vegans commonly use nutritional yeast for cheese flavor....but tbh I would probably say not very. A little.. faint.. but not like "oo, cheesy". The times I've gotten a true cheesy flavor from it is when I've used a LOT of it, like if you sautee mushrooms or something and keep adding yeast, it eventually forms something of a cheesiness.. but sprinkling it on top doesn't do a lot.

They'd want to knock my block off for ordering Domino's, but they'd like where I went with it after that :)

I love pizza once in a while. Sometimes I buy frozen from grocery store “Traders Joe” specifically and add some cheese just like you do. I also have my favorite pizza restaurant where I take out once I n a while and eat it home. You just gave me an idea for this weekend.
Have a great long weekend!

thanks @milano1113, hope you have a great weekend too .. and hope you enjoy your pizza adventures 😀

I hear pizza snobs complain about Dominoes but I love their thin crust. For $5.99 that's a pretty good deal. Is that Gouda the best tasking vegan cheese?

Ya I'd probably avoid it except it's easy to look up the ingredients online whereas if I walk into a pizza joint and start asking about egg in the crust and cheese in the sauce they'll think I'm from another planet or something and probably not even know.

Hmm. I liked the Gouda a lot the first time I had it, could be getting to the point of overusing it and it's less good. I'd maybe recommend their pepper jack if I had to pick one and you like spice.

A lot of people say Daiya isn't as good as the other brands, but I actually like it for grilled cheese anyways, it seems to melt good.. if I had to try to showcase vegan cheese in its best way it would prob be that, a grilled cheese with daiya swiss

like eating it on top of a cracker, the FYH gouda and pepper jack are best imo .. but that'll still probably not be the same as the dairy version .. a good grilled cheese is basically the same experience imo

Great idea!
I didn’t thought about that. Gettting basic pizza from domino delivered and finish it home. I have to definately try it. Every month we have a pizza day so next time I have to do that.

Nice! And ya, you can get creative with what you want to add. The dough and sauce gives you the basic canvas, and then you can add all your own toppings exactly as you want it (and it should be cheaper that way rather than paying for toppings from them)

Is it really domino's pizza? I have never seen the bread so thin like that. :/

lol if I was gonna go into the #fakenews game I'd lie about more important things than this :p

Yes, it's really Domino's hehe. It's their "thin crust" option.

Such a clever hack! Thank you for the tip, I will definitely be doing this. 🍕 I can;t belive I haven't thought of this sooner 😂

yaaaa .. so simple yet so deep! lol .. enjoy

Sounds and looks awesome! The squares are pretty strange, I agree. This is how my grandma used to cut up homemade pizza (but the pizza was a square too).

haha ya! square cut on one of the rectangle pizzas makes sense

I guess consumer studies showed them that people prefer it this way, maybe a triangle cut gets droopy when you hold it lol. I dunno, fast food oddities.

awesome food...
specially i like so much..
thats great on..
thanks for sharing...keep it on
