A Sandwich A Montreal Park And The First Day On The Job

The day before yesterday was the day before the first day of work at a new restaurant. We got up and hoped our last day of freedom would be one hundred percent peaceful and enjoyable. This didn't exactly happen. There was tension between Marc and his mother for what reason I don't know. When she decides it's time to be miserable, there is nothing you can do.

We would not dare ruffle her feathers by making breakfast or lunch. By noon our stomachs were growling with fury. We don't have the funds to spend on eating in a restaurant so we left for a walk to look for a park that we saw on a map. It was one we had never been to and was an hour walk away.

We stopped by a grocer and bought some bread, some hummus that was two for the price of one, a tomato, and some red cabbage. One flavor of hummus was black bean and salsa which I found strange that it was reddish.

The other flavor was edamme and avocado. They were alright when you can't make your own.

We always walk around with a crappy butter knife, fork and spoon that we got from the dollar store a while back so we had utensils. We decided not to spend money on paper plates. I just used a few maple leaves instead.

The moment arrived when we could finally make something to eat at a picnic table a good distance away from the other park goers. We like our personal space.

It was like pulling teeth to cut veggies with a butter knife.

Cutting cabbage was the most difficult. I wanted thin pieces but ended up with chunks. We used a lid as a cutting board.

And then behold the hummus and veggie sandwich on a baguette.

On our way out we savored the sight of the beautiful purple flower garden.

I really don't know what these are but they just look so perfect and cool.

We sat at another park on the way back to capture the last bit of sun on our last day of freedom. When we returned to the house we noticed a message from the restaurant's chef saying he was sorry but he had to change the schedule and didn't mention if we should show up on the first day which was yesterday. I sent him an email and never got a response by the time we were originally suppose to be there. We didn't know if he meant don't show up tomorrow or if he meant the schedule would be changed for the rest of the week. We had no idea so we just assumed we should go.

We walked the two hours that it takes to walk there. Transportation is not affordable at this point for us. We got there twenty minutes before. When we opened the front door we saw a restaurant that looked like it wouldn't be ready for months. The manager that hired us was there along with other management and several construction workers.

We told him we didn't know if we should show up. He said he was sorry that many things went wrong, We told him no problem and that we would leave. He insisted we stay and join a scheduled meeting for the wait staff.

He showed us our kitchen and toured us around the three floor establishment introducing us to some people along the way. The owner was there and frazzled. He seems like a typical stereotype of a miserable restaurant owner. Hopefully he doesn't spend much time there.

When the wait staff arrived we sat for almost two hours and listened to the manager talk about several things. The entire thing was in French and very rapidly spoken. Fortunately I picked up much of it with Marc's help translating certain things. Everyone is perfectly bilingual except myself. The chef is from Paris and can't speak a work of English. This will be interesting.

We were really grateful overall that we got a preview of the place and the menu. The only thing is that he says we will start Sunday but what time he doesn't know. The chef will send an email. So far we have not received it.

The suspense continues.

I would love to have one of these bad boys right now @carolynstahl

Love Montreal food. Poutine and smoked meat.

Hoping you've heard back by now and that you guys are happy with the new job.

Those pretty purple balls are alliums =D. I love them too. They're in the same family as onions, leeks, etc. I have some in my garden and enjoy them so much.

Even with your crappy utensils, you managed to make a beautiful sandwich! And you always do a great job with your photos!

Oh thank you so much for the compliment and reading the post. We are both working now.

Thank you also for the info of the flowers. The funny thing is that I was saying that they look like a giant chive but I was sure if it was just a coincidence or not.

good luck with speaking french! and I walk about 100 miles a month minimum for my bread runs.

Oh hello bread master! Thank you for your wishes. I need it. I just love walking long distances, but walking two hours to a slave job...scary. Walking two hours from a slave job...joyful. Walking in a blizzard -30 c below freezing this up coming winter....we are going to move closer haha!

My friend how are you?
I think a lot I wish that soon they can live alone

My friend the time will come again for leaving this place. Hope you are well!
