The proposed ban on vaping needs to hold a discussion

The Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) needs to hold an engagement session with all parties in the vape industry. So that they can discuss the proposal to ban the exhibition and sale of the vape product.

Mohamad Neezam Talib, chairman of the Malaysia E-Vaporizers and Tobacco Alternative Association (MEVTA) comments about this. He says the meeting is very important. Also, he says it is a discussion platform for all parties to express their views on the proposal.

The chairman comments about the enforcement ban proposed by the Ministry of Health. He says it is too strict on the taste, design and standardized packaging of vapes. Besides, it is likely to strangle the local vape industry.

"The Ministry of Health will prohibit vape products from being displayed in shops. And. prohibit the sale of vape liquid bottles manufactured by local entrepreneurs."

"We do not agree with these proposals. Because many local entrepreneurs will be affected and many workers in the industry will be affected by these drastic proposals."

On Monday, MEVTA, Persatuan Peniaga Vape Melayu (PPVM) and Persatuan Pengeluar Cecair Vape Malaysia (MEBA) made a joint statement.

In the statement, Talib says that the association have never been invited to discuss any proposed ban.

"So far, we have never been invited to discuss the proposed ban on flavor control, standardized packaging, display of products in stores or sale of e-liquids."

PPVM Chairman Sabri Ismail suggested that the Ministry of Health introduce regulations for vapes that are different from those for tobacco products. So as to find a balance in formulating product rules. Besides, MEBA president Zack Ariffin says banning vape sales could also put many local merchants bankrupt.

"Such a ban will only give an advantage to foreign companies and imported products. Because disposable vape products and closed vape systems are imported from China. The government should make a policy by considering to the local industry."
