VALORANT game developer and publisher, Riot Games, is no stranger to heavy criticisms about their design decisions in the esports scene. They are one of the biggest companies in the industry, hosting some of the top leagues in esports as a whole. Lately, one of the hottest topics that they are involved in is the presence of Ascent, one of the most polarising maps.
The Ascent map was released in 2020 but conflicting opinions surrounding it continue even 4 years later. Kim ‘Stax’ Gu-taek of DRX weighed in on the topic in April 2024 in an interview with Rabia Sayal from GiNX.TV. She asked him what map he’d want to remove from the game and he answered ‘Ascent’ and said he’s confident everyone playing VALORANT agrees.

DRX may have won on the Ascent map but Stax believes that it’s not a fun map. The interview was short so he was unable to elaborate on it. However, he was able to share that he wishes Fracture or Pearl to come back if Ascent is ever removed because he misses them.
Besides Stax, many people share that the map needs to be removed. Answers vary as to why it is hated but there is a common pattern from recent social media discourses and Reddit posts from when Ascent was introduced. The main consensus is that it’s too favourable for the defensive team and progress is slow for both sides.
A common concern people bring up is Site B or the route attackers have to take to get to it. While the choke point is fairly wide, players experience getting sniped almost immediately as they peak around the corners. Stax claimed that he’s confident that he can speak for all VALORANT players about its removal, but there is a vocal counterargument to this claim. Discussions online shared that people enjoy Ascent specifically because of its bias towards the defenders. According to them, attacking is easy and being forced to defend is typically not favourable on more open maps.
Ascent’s limited routes force attackers to play more slowly because they can’t flank as recklessly as they would in most other maps. It’s not disabling but it forces players from both sides to master their utilities rather than rely solely on guns and movements.
