Where's the Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Vaccine?

These are just questions, so don't shoot me for asking them.

Like the measles, HFMD (Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease) can be fatal, and cause encephalopathy.

Why have the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and WHO (World Health Organization) chosen to focus so much on the measles/MMR vaccine, when HFMD, having some of the same potentially fatal complications, is still around? There is no vaccine for HFMD. Why? It could still make a fatal comeback in the unvaccinated US.

It killed 55 children in Taipei, Taiwan from April to July in 1998. That is many more lives than the measles has claimed in the US in decades.

What about cholera? There is a vaccine, but it is not given to children in most developed countries.

According to this source cholera kills 28,800 - 130,000 people every year. If measles is deadly and must be vaccinated for in developed countries, why not cholera? What does the WHO ("World Health Organization") have to say about this?

Cholera is most deadly in Africa and Southeast Asia, and claims up to 130,000 lives a year. Low-balling the cholera stats from above for the sake of erring on the side of caution, we can see that 1 in 200 people that get cholera will die from it (granted this is much less likely in developed countries).

28,800 deaths in 5 million cases

28,000 / 5,000,000 = .005

5/1000

1/200

One might argue that sewage and sanitation systems have rendered it a non-issue in the US. The CDC agrees (see below), but people still travel and are at risk, and the disease is still highly contagious. Wouldn't it be better to prevent it by using a vaccine? Measles is often imported by travelers as well, as the CDC warns.

Although it seems more easily treatable than measles, it does seem somewhat serious if it can "kill within hours."

Like cholera, measles tends to be more serious in the places where hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation are poor. It also tends to affect children under 5, and adults over 20 years of age more seriously. Serious complications usually occur in individuals with weak immune systems or other health issues which complicate the illness.

The 1 out of 1,000 people that the CDC (somewhat dubiously) says will die of measles when infected, then, is almost always going to be a person who was already sick or whose immune system was compromised/malnourished. This must be true then for cholera and HFMD as well, no?

So, if measles, cholera, and HFMD share so many similarities, why aren't all three being vaccinated against? Why aren't all three being talked about?

Can't the other two (Cholera/HFMD) make a comeback in the US since herd immunity is not being vaccine-maintained?

Hello @kafkanarchy84
These new vaccines have the potential to significantly reduce suffering and death from EV71 disease in China and in the future, the rest of the world. Nevertheless, manufacturing capacity and policy challenges remain for market entry and regulatory applications in other countries in the region with large populations of infants and children. Some questions remain: Will Chinese manufacturers make the vaccine available to other countries with EV71 outbreaks? Cross-protection of the vaccines against pandemic virus strains? How will they incorporate EV71 vaccine into the EPI? Can the vaccine be co-administered with other vaccines? How do you standardize the vaccine quality control and evaluation of EV71 vaccines? Having 2 vaccines against HFMD made in China is not only a milestone in the global vaccine field, but a testament to the hard work and innovation of the country’s scientific community and a boost to the local manufacturing sector.

Have you seen the documentary Vaxxed? If not, please do. There is so much corruption in this industry that leaves you scratching your head, like what you talked about in this post. Thank you for sharing.

I'm aware of it. Really need to see it. Also aware of the corruption to a fairly large extent, I think.

Hello, my name is Urma.

I currently take care of a young adult who was vaccine injured with Autism after receiving the Varicella vaccine. Today he has improved considerably, however, it is clear that the Autism is still preventing him from leading a normal life.

Please if you care about your child's health, don't get vaccinated

Hi, Urma. I am very sorry to hear that, and thanks for your comment.

It all makes perfect sense when you follow the money.

Africa & Southeast Asia don't have huge medical insurance industries and, therefore can't be pumped for cash like the developed countries.

Plus, Africa has vast natural resources that can be exploited once big segments of the population die off.

If Cholera was vaccinated against it wouldn't be able to be used as a weapon as I believe it was in Haiti when it was introduced (accidentally of course ;-) by the UN or in Yemen where it is further devasting an already devastated population.
You've pointed out something seemingly obvious & you have to wonder whether the decision was deliberate or alternatively come up with excuses as offered by @everittdmickey (which could of course be correct)

I think that there are several factors in play, and the biggest is profitability. If the demand will not be tremendous, the vaccine will not be developed or distributed. It follows the same logic as 'orphaned diseases' - diseases that are not widespread enough to make research and development into possible cures unprofitable.

In developed countries, many diseases are considered to have been wiped-out, and conditions unlikely to produce an outbreak, so mass-vaccinations are not being performed. As global travel increases, we may have to rethink that strategy.

I am seriously wondering whether the whole anti-vax movement is orchestrated in order to re-awaken some of these diseases, and perform some sort of a mass population-cull. I really don't understand why people would put their children at risk of some of these diseases, and if they simply cannot understand that the only reason they are not suffering from them right now is because everyone else took the vaccines and as a result there is herd-immunity. Really sad, but their children will be the first to sicken and die when the epidemics hit, but it was, in the end, their choice. Sadly, some of the people who were responsible and took the vaccines will die along with them, though.

That's a good point. I was thinking it must have something to do with profitability, but was having trouble coming up with a reason why the vaccine manufacturers and CDC wouldn't be able to promote sales, as they do with the MMR vaccine.

This is the first time I have heard this idea. I tend to think the converse is true, as herd immunity (as per the classical definition) is being systematically compromised en masse via temporary, inferior, vaccine-induced immunity. I write about that here if you are interested.

I really don't understand why people would put their children at risk of some of these diseases.

Conversely, I cannot understand why individuals would inject their children with vaccines that are not in simultaneous conjunction with other vaccines. The VAERS database is full of unaddressed reports, and the vaccine makers remain legally immune (no pun intended) to lawsuit.

All that said, I appreciate your thoughts, and do take them into consideration. If you would ever like to talk about/discuss these topics on a panel show in a respectful atmosphere I'd be glad to have you on. Just let me know.

My voice is worse than David Stein/Cole's. I will have to respectfully decline, in everybody's best interest.

BTW, I have no issue with a multi-strain vaccination. I personally believe we are now doing too many shots for no good reason. I am also aware of the legal immunity that vaccine manufacturers enjoy, which is not a good thing, and should never have happened. It does say something for big pharma, though. My former sister-in-law worked doing human drug trials, and most of them were tainted, yet she was forced to look the other way. When she didn't want to, and tried to start her business doing it right, they ruined her. Buggers are as powerful as bankers and tobacco.

Nice article, by the way. I enjoyed your open-mindedness.

Lol. It doesn't matter about your voice, but I appreciate the response all the same. That is shocking about your former sister-in-law. I would love to talk with people with those kinds of experiences as well.

The feeling is mutual, on the open-mindedness. It is truly a rarity these days. Thank you.

She's now driving a bus in Scotland. It really broke her, and her patience with living here.

At a time when the government is sponsoring mass immigration you would think we'd see all the warnings and cautions that immigrants may be bringing in these diseases. But the government does not want to put it's own foot in mouth, and let us all know that there is a potential danger from mass immigration. It seems to be collusion. Because your points make complete sense, if the danger is at the same potential, why not? Just theorizing, but I bet once it is an established epidemic, that they allowed, we would be more than willing to be vaxxed in the panic. Might want to buy stock in Merck.

Really interesting points. Had never thought of that possibility.

there's been a lot of bad PR against Vaccines lately
Anti-Vaxxers...you may have heard of them?
Perhaps the people who COULD have developed a new vaccine didn't want to endure it.
Perhaps they didn't want to be called monsters and accused of genocide?
Be careful what you want, you may get it.

I am pro-knowledge, and everyone has a right to choose.

do they?
or must they choose the way you want them too?
