Why utopian.io should upvote and resteem approved contributions immediately after approval
Improve exposure of approved contributions
Utopian.io allows Steemians to be rewarded for contributions to the open source world. In order to prevent abuse, a process is in place that demands contributions to be approved by a moderator. Once a contribution is approved, it is set for an upvote from the bot that runs under the name @utopian-io. The bot decides based on a rule set about the applied voting power for the upvote. This percentage is usually in the range between 3% and 25%. This process seems to be working fine for the most part, so rewards are distributed to contributors.
Rewards are nice, but also recognize the contributions
While rewards are important, it is also important to recognize the contributions themselves. Once a contribution is approved, a contribution is a new member of the open source world that should be evaluated and discussed by the community. Depending on the nature of a contribution, there can be many open questions that need to be discussed before a contribution should become part of an open source product that might be used on a daily basis by many people.
- Does it really make sense?
- Should things be added, changed or removed?
- Does it open the door for other contributions?
- How does it interefere with other contributions?
- Are there any risks associated with a contribution that have not been seen before?
It is hard to find approved contributions
In order to discuss these questions, a contribution needs to be seen in the first place, but with the current setup it is not easy to explore contributions that have been recently approved. Being able to see an overview of recently approved contributions might be helpful On Steemit, post that are tagged with #utopian-io can be listed in the trending/new/hot views. However, there is no view that shows contributions that have recently been approved. Actually, some upvote bots seem to already use recent approval as a signal for placing their upvote, because an approved post is guaranteed to get a relatively high upvote from @utopian-io, so if such a post has not many upvotes yet, upvoting it almost guarantees good curation rewards.
I propose that utopian.io registers a dedicated Steem account (let's call it @utpn-approvals) for a bot that is upvoting and resteeming all contributions immediately after they have been approved by a moderator.
Why upvote approved contributions immediately?
An approved contribution has passed the first hurdle. It can already be seen as a valuable and serious contribution to the open source world. Since bot voters most probably are already using approval from utopian.io as a curation signal, @utopian-io could just take a piece of the cake by splitting it's upvote (and Steem Power) in two parts: one upvote with fixed voting power (1%?) would occur immediately after approval of a post and a second upvote would come as usual from @utopian-io. This would improve the exposure of the contribution on Steem and the @utpn-approvals would have the chance to earn curation rewards for all subsequent upvotes. These earnings could flow back into utopian.io as funds for more contribution rewards.
Also resteem approvals
Right after upvoting them, @utpn-approvals could resteem approved contributions. This way, anyone who want to review approved contributions and take part in discussions around them would have the chance to find them by following @utpn-approvals, or visiting @utpn-approvals' blog for a chronological view of all approvals. I can imagine that this has the potential to decrease the spread in upvotes that is caused by the different standings in Steem that contributors might have. Displaying contributions chronologically gives each contribution an equal chance to be seen by interested readers.
What you you think? Does that makes sense? Is it flawed? Too complicated? Let me know in the comments.
TL;DR
Utopian.io could register a second account for another bot that upvotes and resteems all approved contributions. This way, approved contributions could get more exposure and utopian.io could earn some curation rewards that could flow back into the project.
