A. Introduction

This is @rosatravels. I am one of the active hunters to help grow the Steemhunt platform by contributing new & cool products there everyday. Currently each hunter is allowed to have 2 submissions per day. My special area of interest is to look for Open Source work. Ever since I became one of the top hunters for Open Source Projects, there has been an increasing numbers of Open Source Hunts submitted everyday. This is great news. Out of the 300+ submissions, a small proportion belongs to Open Source work.

The purpose of this blog is to promote 3 cool Open Source applications that have received quite a bit of attention by the community. Voting plays a big role as the Steemhunt audience decides which products or hunts are the coolest for the day. So by the end of the daily window, the higher ranking hunts receive upvotes from Steemhunt based on their hunt scores. If you wish to know which Open Source Hunts are getting more attention, follow this series of blog posts. Some Open Source projects are definitely gaining traction in attracting a wider audience into Steemhunt. More people are commenting, downloading Open Source softwares and using their website platforms.

B. Cool Open Source Work for You to Use Today

I go through the lists of Open Source submissions everyday. The following 3 Open Source projects received a high number of votes. These products are also widely used by people around the world everyday to build their businesses. I am familiar with them because my team has been using these Open Source work for my internet business and they have proven to be secure and reliable.

C. Steemhunt is About Discovering Cool Products

There is a misunderstanding that the Steemhunt platform requires a long writing description of the hunt. Unfortuantely not. You can read about this in the most updated post on July 10th.

The main purpose of the Steemhunt platform is to curate the coolest and best product of the day. Hunters are not required to write a detail report on their amazing product at all, thus Steemhunt is not a writing curation project. Less so is it a writing contest. All that is required is curating the best amazing product everyday.

As a result, when these Open Source products are discovered by the hunters, you do not find any great effort in the description of the Open Source product in their posts. Thus, steemhunt is a daily ranking board to promote cool products effortlessly. There is no effort required in the final write up of the hunting post. The real effort lies in the time it takes to discover and search for the hunt. Hunters spend much of their time to look for the newest and coolest hunt, and it is a shame that when these Open Source projects are posted, the description is usually not elaborate enough in the promotion.

In view of the above, the purpose of my series of Utopian.io Blog Posts on promoting Steemhunt Platform is 2 fold:

1. Give you Tips to promote Open Source Products on Steemhunt as you grow your audience. You can find great resources on this first post.

2. Promote these Open Source Hunts by enhancing the description report that is lacking on the Steemhunt posts .

In this way, you get the best of both worlds. You discover cool Open Source Hunts on the Steemhunt platform, while at the same time, you have the advantage of my added detailed descriptions to some of these highly recommended Open Source Hunts in my Utopian.io Blog series.

D. Promote Further the 3 Chosen Open Source Hunts with Enhanced Descriptions

1. Promoting Open Source Software 7-Zip

7-Zip is a free open source software to gather groups of files within compressed containers known as "archives". The developor, Igor Pavlov, released it in 1999. Most of the code is under the GNU LGPL license.

• The core 7z compression uses a variety of algorithms. The most common are bzip2, PPMd, LZMA2, and LZMA.
• 7-Zip supports other compression and non-compression archive formats: ZIP, Gzip, bzip2, xz, tar and WIM.
• The utility supports unpacking APM, ARJ, CHM, cpio, DEB, FLV, JAR, LHA/LZH, LZMA, MSLZ, Office Open XML, onepkg, RAR, RPM, smzip, SWF, XAR and Z archives and CramFS, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, MBR, NTFS, SquashFS, UDF and VHD disk images.
• For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip compresses a ratio of 2-10% better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
• 7-Zip is available in Windows 10, 8, 7 / Vista / XP / 2016 / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000 / NT.

As you can see, 7-Zip has a wide range of algorithms in the packing and unpacking. Ever since I started my online business in 2006, I have been using 7-Zip to zip up my large video-sized files for my clients to download when they buy my products on my websites. In the beginning, my clients have never heard of 7-Zip before. Over the years, I have given tutorials to help them use 7-Zip files efficiently to unzip my video large files onto their computers. Actually there is no needed learning curve in using this software, but my clients are mainly music enthusiasts and not computer techs savvy at all. So I found myself teaching them about computer software before they can jump into the real thing. The downside of 7-Zip is that this software is only available for Windows users.

2. Promoting Open Source VirtualBox

VirtualBox is a free and open source hypervisor for x86 computers, targeted at server, desktop and embedded use. The technology provides a sandboxed, protected space for an operating system to run. It allows the Operating System to run entirely on another one. The project was initially developed by Innotek GmbH, and later acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2008 and eventually by Oracle Coperation since 2010. The core package is under GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) since December 2010.

b. The Features that I like about VirtualBox:

This desktop virtualization software has the ability to install and run multiple Operating Systems on your desktop or laptop computer in virtual environment without disturbing the host OS. I watch my computer guru doing this whenever he comes to give my computer a check-up. The huge advantage I see is that the other OS that is installed and running in VirtualBox can be isolated from the computer OS so that if it gets a virus or is hacked, it does not affect the actual OS installed on the computer. The neat thing that I see is that if your other OS does get damaged in any way such as catching a virus, then VirtualBox can be used to reset back to what it was before the damage occurred. With the desktop virtualization software, you can run and work on multiple OS simultaneously without rebooting. This is truly a time saving factor.

VirtualBox can be installed on a number of host operating systems: Windows, MacOS, Linux, Solaris, and OpenSolaris.

The project owner provides a detailed user manual in html format so that you can follow along easily. I click on the links in the areas that I get stuck and each tutorial will help you overcome the difficulty.

3. Promoting Open Source PlatformIO

PlatformIO is an Open Source ecosystem for IoT development. This is a cross platform code builder and library manager with platforms like Arduino or MBED support. Initially, PlatformIO was developed with Command line philosophy but it has been used efficiently with Eclipse or Visual Studio. Recently a new released version was built in IDE based on the open source Atom text editor. PlatformIO was nominated for the best Software and Tools in the year 2015 to 2016 IoT Awards.

b. The Features that I like about PlatformIO:

My team of developers uses this platform to build our website businesses. The toolchains, debuggers, frameworks work on most popular platforms like Windows, Mac and Linux.

The good thing about the platform is that it supports at least 200 development boards, thus most popular boards are covered. Hundreds of libraries are organized and managed therefore they can be included in to your project. You can start developing quickly with these resources.

In the build process, it combines all your files together. It adds headers based on what you are doing, and compiles one big file. You can create multiple files for larger projects. All files are written in .ino format instead of .c or .cpp. It supports code syntax highlighting, code autocomplete and compile time check.

This PlatformIO is gaining more and more popularity. The efficiency of building and having everything in one place helps organize my internet business better as we are spreading our wings into many different areas due to the demands from clients requests.

I especially highlighted these 3 chosen Open Source Work on the Steemhunt platform because of their high votes and also their popularity. From my experiences, they are secure and reliable and have proven valuable for the administration of my internet business. Without them, we would not be where we are in our internet business.
