This app is open source and is built for the Android community.I have a new logo design for Droidfeed.When designing the logo for Droidfeed, I brought together the British key and the android icons, which are the best identifiers for Droidfeed.The reason I designed the new logo is the old logo black and white and a meaningless logotype.

You don't need a permission actually, it's just better to get in touch with them before starting to work. Taking their opinions about what they want to see in their logos or do they willing to change their logos, etc..
Your contribution cannot be approved because it does not follow the Utopian Rules.
Any type of graphics submissions is acceptable only if it was explicitly requested by the project owner or if the contributor can provide a clear proof that their submission has been accepted and used in the project.
All submissions must be licensed under the creative commons license.
It would be better if you get in touch with project owners before you start to work, they may have some ideas about what they want/need in their logos and it would help your creative process..
And I don't think, android head and a wrench is the best way to explain what DroidFeed application does. So I would say it's not an improvement.
