Organizations

The world of STEEMPUNK-NET is dominated by organizations and big corporations which have replaced governments. They compete against each other for power and the data of the citizens.

Companies

The big corporations have abolished the separation of powers: Every company tries to get the three powers of making laws (legislative), exercising powers (executive) and judiciary into their own hands. They announce their own rules and laws, using their own paramilitaries and company armies to control the observance of those laws and hold court themselves.

The following companies are known:

Ultima Corporation: One of the most powerful corporations on earth, that step by step buys it’s competitors and assimilates them. Producer of biomedical implants that every citizen of the middle and upper class gets implanted already at birth. Because of this, the Ultima Corporation has access to the medical data of a big part of the general public. More projects to control the citizens exist in the area of entertainment and social media.
Company motto: Trust us, and we manage your life”.

Syndicates

Even thought the big corporations are always in a fight for the upper hand, they have a common goal: total control of the citizen. Therefore, for specific tasks, the companies associate themselves to syndicates if that furthers the common goal.

The following syndicates are known:

STEEMPUNK-NET: Brought into life by the most important corporations, the bread-and-games-organizer STEEMPUNK-NET offers rebellious citizens the possibility to pit their strength against others in duels and to break out of the system in a controlled way. Registering is easy and the possible rewards are high. Using implants, the battle data is recorded. In this way rebellious aristocrats are controlled and with the implants the most recalcitrant adventurers are lured into the arms of the data kraken.

Places

Steemopolis Megacity (working title)

Possible inspiration: Blame!, Kowloon Walled City

This city is the central junction in the world of STEEMPUNK-NET and seat of numerous organizations. Because space is scarce the city is always growing upwards. The higher they are, the more wealthy the inhabitants are. At the top there is clean air and sun light; in the lower areas twilight rules and constant smog is clogging the throat.

Sectors

The city is split into the following sectors:

Topmost sector: “Skyground”. Here lives the new upper class: families of entrepreneurs and fat cats, that pose themselves as the new aristocracy, even when the families don’t have a long tradition to show. New money and believers in technology, the Skyground is mega futuristic, sterile, clean and efficient. In the living rooms the people try without success to conserve the culture of bygone centuries. Kitschy velvet sofas and massive ebony furniture offer a stark contrast to the rational-cool designs of the newest technologies. What sounds like utopia is a nightmare at a closer look. The transparent citizen also means total surveillance: Starting from birth every citizen is tracked constantly. Revolting against the golden cage is not possible.

Middle sector: “Midcity”. Here the average Joes are living their dull life, controlled by advertisements, meaningless entertainment and long work hours in open plan offices without sunlight. Midcity is online; the citizens are under total control of the big corporations.

Earth surface: “Ground Zero”. Here lives the lower class and fights for survival. To survive, the “underground-rats” and adventurers have to reactivate old technologies. Creativity is a big thing. Junky steampunk flair, unreliable energy, insufficient health service and urban gardening. Only the biggest rascals can afford to be online here.

Lower sector: “Darkzone”. Especially dark part of Ground Zero, under the earth. Like the Darknet in our world and decoupled from the rest of the city. Here you buy drugs or order spy and assassination missions. The Darkzone is offline.
