RE: Utopian Rules Update #5

Contributions should be in plain English and fully understandable. The only accepted exceptions are:

Contributions under the Tutorials and Video Tutorials Category.

In my opinion, the majority of people who use computers can understand English already. tutorials in a non English language are excluding more people than they're including.
I can't even imagine a non-English tutorial on something like a programming language. ^_^

Sort:

Why not? Whole books have been written in different languages. Just think of children learning to program, schools, ... Not the whole world is about English.

Even not all programming languages are English. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-English-based_programming_languages

I get your point but it's generalizing. There is quite some software out there that's not even available in English.

i18n is so important because there is more than just English navel-gazing.

I based my opinion on what came out after crunching the numbers,

  • I imagine my country,
  • how many use computers,
  • how many of them actually use computer for something other than porn and movies,
  • how many of them know about open source,
  • how many of them will ever visit utopian in their lifetime,
  • then I subtract all of those whom can understand English,
  • And there's only two left whom can't even understand why this website don't have any images of Jenifer Lopez... and they can't even read why.

of curse it's my personal opinion but me writing a tutorial on how to calculate hashes using python in my native language is catering to an audience that doesn't really exist.

it is, however a different story when it comes to software that are not in English. but I only used tow or three of them in my lifetime, and I'm on my computer 24/7.

Totaly agree with you.

very good analysis ---
