Introduction

In this blog post you'll learn about the Open Source platform called Wordpress; the difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org and also learn about who uses Wordpress.

What is Wordpress

Wordpress is a free Open Source content management system that's built on two programming languages called PHP and MySQL . Wordpress has software components called plugins that enable Wordpress users extend the functionalities of their websites. The plugins coem in both free and paid packages and can be downloaded from the Wordpress plugin site. Wordpress has a wide array of templates for its users to choose from; both free and paid.

What is the Difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org

Wordpress.com is a blogging platform that runs on the Wordpress CMS/software. Wordpress.com gives you the ability to kickstart your own blog immediately by simply registering and choosing either the free or paid plan. On wordpress.org, you have to download the Wordpress software and install it on your local host or on your hosting service such as Dreamhost or BlueHost.

What can I use Wordpress.com for?

You can use the Wordpress platform to start your own blogging site. The basic features of the Wordpress platform are free but you'll have to pay for extra features such as domain registration, removal of adverts, video upload, etc.

What can I use Wordpress.org for?

On Wordpress.org you can download the Wordpress software and install it on your local host on your computer using servers like Xampp or Wamp or install it on your hosting service provided by your hosting provider. Hosting providers include the likes of Dreamhost and BlueHost. You can build social networks, e-commerce websites, hotel directories and other high end websites on the Wordpress platform.

Who Uses Wordpress?

According to Wikipedia, Wordpress is used by more than 24.9% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2018. It powers more than 60 million websites on the internet and its by the likes of Microsoft, CNN, CBS, Reuters amongst others.

Final Words on Wordpress

Wordpress enables people that are not programming language savvy to easily build their own websites with ease and most importantly get input from other users on the forums. I recommend it to anyone trying to build a website or get their projects on the internet.

Nice introduction, love it! As a WordPress developer working on this platform for more than 5 years, I can say that this open source project can be a very powerful tool for building from most simple websites to bigger and more complicated web apps and social networks.

Yes that's true; thanks for visiting my blog.
