Introduction

In January 2018 alone a total of 159,742 users joined steemit. Many joined for different reasons, whether or not these reasons were accomplished we cannot verify but we can observe their activities over a period of time and draw a conclusion whether they were able to survive the heat in the steemit kitchen

POST COUNT ANALYSIS

The users who registered in January 2018 have made a total of 5,886,020 post (including comments). 98.51% of users have made less than 500 post within the period under review.

77,961 users representing 48.8% of users who registered in January have made zero (0) posts (including comments)

The highest number of post was made by @a-0-0 with 62,819 posts

REPUTATION ANALYSIS

Reputation is an indicator of how far a user has come in terms of rewards from the point of registration. Reputation makes you respectable on the platform.

By adding value to the system, your reputation level increases. After account approval, you are given a reputation of 25 and some delegated steem power to enable you perform basic functions on the platform.

User @burnpost has the highest reputation of the new comers in January at 71

129,188 users representing 80.87% of users that registered in January still have the default reputations of 25

SAVINGS AND BALANCE

From basic Economics which we all have an idea of, saving is an integral part of financial management. You save for many and different reasons, one of which is for the days of lack or few.

With no savings, when things get a little bumpy and rough where are you going to look to? I will be looking at what January registered users have been able to save since they joined.

SBD SAVINGS

158,543 accounts representing 99.25% of users who registered in January have 0.00 SBD in their savings. This is actually not a good stat from basic economics

The remaining users were able to save a total of 8,599.05 SBD

User @benswann has the best savings with 1120.282 SBD

STEEM SAVINGS

100% of all accounts that registered in January have 0.00 STEEM in savings.

SBD BALANCE

Balance is the amount of money in the bank accessible at any given time, it can be withdrawn at any time by the user.

127,660 users representing 79.92% of accounts registered in January have 0.00 SBD in their balance

Majority of account have between 0 - 10 SBD in their balance

User @ipromote has the biggest balance with 15,868.26 SBD

STEEM BALANCE

142,238 representing 89.04% of users that registered in January have 0.00 STEEM in their balance

99.26% of accounts registered in January have between 0 - 10 STEEM in their balance

User @binance-hot has the highest balance with 6,036,812.978 STEEM

LAST POST AND LAST VOTE ANALYSIS

This can be used to verify how active an account is. In web analytics, the term "active" can mean page views and just reading other people's post and comments. There is limited access to such information available to the public

In my case, i would be using the last post and last vote to verify the "activeness" of an account

LAST POST

77,961 users have their accounts reading 1st Janaury 1970 as their last post date meaning they have NEVER posted on steemit. That is a whooping 48.80% meaning most people after registering never post again ( they may actually be logging in to read and probably vote on other post, that i cannot verify)

33,324 last posted in January
18,830 last posted in February
10,567 last posted in March
7,374 last posted in April
11,686 last posted in May ( up till 11th May)

LAST VOTE

Voting is one of the most "easiest" activity on steemit because it takes less than 2 seconds to complete. It can be a pointer to when last an account did anything "serious" or was active

102,965 last voted in January
19,828 last voted in February
10,741 last voted in March
9,884 last voted in April
16,324 last voted in May (up till 11th May)

Conclusion

From all the data analyzed here, we can draw some simple conclusions

  • Account retention on steemit is poor
  • Only a few users are making progress
  • Adding value to the platform is proportional to reputation and earnings
  • Saving is not taken seriously on the platform, people are all about consuming for the now.

In my own personal view, i think a lot of people are attracted by the idea of a "paying" social media and fast earning. And when they join they discover it is not like the normal Facebook or Twitter that they are used too. I think that contribute to "dumping" of accounts.
They few who understand the working of the platform make a lot of progress rapidly.

Without earning much, what do you want to save? I believe when users start earning more, saving will be in their plans.

Let me hear your views in the comment section
