Awakening to the importance of Open Source
Utopian Reflections is a series of posts in which I reflect on particular aspects of the Utopian ecosystem and how it affects the Open Source world.
I recently noticed something that a lot of people will probably experience as a result of them using Utopian (mostly people new to Open Source, that is). I have to admit that I wasn't really aware of how big Open Source is, not as much as I am now. Using Utopian has been an awakening of a special kind.
Nowadays, whenever I see a GitHub icon on a website or an app or site that says it's Open Source and it's on GitHub, it really opens my eyes to how big this space is.
I mean, there a so many projects out there and a lot of them will benefit because of Utopian. With one project in particular, I had the inclination to contribute with whatever I could, something I wouldn't have done if I wasn't on Utopian and exposed to the Open Source world. I didn't contribute because of time constraints, but I will probably do so when time permits.
And when I do contribute, there are other effects that will come with it too:
Any project that gets contributions coming in via Utopian also gets the added benefit of being showcased to a lot of Utopian users, which ends up attracting even more contributors and suddenly you'll have a lot of people interested in the project. Now, if everyone on Utopian right now contributes to a project that is new to Utopian in general, we'll probably have thousands of projects enter the ecosystem.
A lot of good products have come out of the Open Source world: Bitcoin, BitcoinCash, Steem, Utopian, to just name a few; and all of them enabled other projects to come into existence, serving a different set of our needs as humans.
Open Source is a blessing to mankind. A shift in the notion of productivity that takes away the bondage of bureaucracy and lets people collaborate in new ways. I find this moment in time very interesting.
I'll end my post with this:
Open Source enables people to work together and create digital products that benefit humanity and ensure our freedom. Whenever a group of like-minded people work together for a genuinely good purpose, in an environment of free-thought, free-creativity and transparency then progress is made, and our lives are changed.
