I agree with you that manually entering 20, 50 friends name is cumbersome, but how the app should manage those automatically added contacts? It should add all contacts? Also, I never added the birth dates in the phonebook, so I should edit every added contact and add the birth date for every contact, it is also a bit cumbersome.
Syncing from Facebook could be nice, but the PO should get an Dev API Key first and then ask for permissions to the user and some PO are not happy with that. Also, depending on privacy settings on some of the friends' accounts, you may or may not be able to access birthday data.
And, I do not know about you but most of my friends on Facebook are not really close friends.
