Project Details

ReactOS is a free and open source operating system written from scratch. It's design is based on Windows in the same way Linux is based on Unix, however ReactOS is not linux. ReactOS looks and feels like Windows, is able to your run Windows software and your Windows drivers, and is familiar for Windows users.

Development began in 1996, as a Windows 95 clone project, and was continued as ReactOS in 1998, with the incremental addition of features of later Windows versions.

As of July 2018, ReactOS is considered alpha software, feature-incomplete but with many Windows applications already working (e.g. Adobe Reader 6.0, OpenOffice, etc) and therefore recommended by the developers only for evaluation and testing purposes.

ReactOS is released under GNU GPLv2 Open Source license, with some parts released under LGPL and BSD licenses.

Translation Overview

This is the fourteenth part of the ReactOS translation. There are some strings that were already translated. I'm translating the project file by file, so as I'm encountering those translated strings I'm fixing them or leaving them alone (depending on what needs to be done)

Subject to @ruth-girl's proof-reading, the project is now 57% translated. ReactOS translations are split into many files, so I'm going on a per-file translation, aiming to hit 1200 words on each contribution.

The project is being translated from English to Greek. I'm a native Greek and because of my job (programmer) English is a "must learn" language.

In this session

In this session I translated the following utilities/apps:

powercfg, sysdm, telephon, timedate, usrmgr, wined3dcfg, acppage

The Longest String I can recall in this part comes from the file acppage and is:

If you have problems running this program in ReactOS, select an operating system ReactOS should report to the application.\nPlease note that this is a work in progress.

Contrary to what became of the longest string in the previous session, it didn't become that much longer, although it got a few extra words.

Εάν έχετε πρόβλημα να εκτελέσετε το πρόγραμμα στο ReactOS, επιλέξτε ποιο λειτουργικό σύστημα θέλετε το ReactOS να αναφέρει στην εφαρμογή ότι βρίσκεται.\nΠαρακαλώ σημειώστε ότι αυτή η λειτουργία είναι υπό εξέλιξη.

The worst/funniest Machine translation can be located in the file powercfg (this one is a library for joypads)

Activate &low battery alarm when power level reaches

Microsoft Translator decided to translate it as Ενεργοποίηση χαμηλής μπαταρίας συναγερμού όταν η ενέργεια φτάσει, which literally means "Enable low power alarm, when the power level reaches"

The correct translation for this, however, is Ενεργοποίηση της ειδοποίησης χαμηλής μπαταρίας όταν η ενέργεια φτάσει!

And finally, the worst/funniest translation submitted by third-parties is by far this string in the telephon library:

Phone and Modem Options is translated as Προσθαφαίρεση Προγραμμάτων, which is the correct translation for "Add/Remove Programs". The funniest thing: it's the approved translation!

The correct one would be Επιλογές Τηλεφώνου και Μόντεμ and it was suggested by the same user.

Most already submitted translations are bad (and I'm being generous with the wording)

Word Count

I translated 1246 words, minus an estimated 8% for duplicates and untranslated words, which brings us to ~1146 words, for a total of 15804 words out of 37669 words. All numbers were rounded to the nearest integer (as you obviously can't translate 724.24 words)

Proof of Authorship

tl;dr version

ReactOS is a great project, aiming to help the average Joe try a free alternative operating system, without having to change a lot of his habits. It has a long way to go though, as it is still in alpha development stage. I'm proud to translate this into Greek, as I've always been secretly supporting this project!

I have translated 1246 words (-8% for duplicates and untranslated words = ~1146 words) for a total of 15804 words out of 37669 words. I'm now translating libraries used to power your devices, and things can get ugly! But I have faith in me, and I'll pull through ;)

Thank you everyone for taking your time to read about my contribution. Big thanks to the @utopian-io and @davinci.witness teams for making this possible, and also to the rest of the people of the Greek Translation Team that I'm proud to be part of. Feel free to follow the rest of them to check their translations!

Thank you for your 32nd contribution to the Davinci-Utopian translation project @dimitrisp!
This was the 14th part of the ReactOS project.

Your translation was again great, no corrections were needed. I trust your judgement 100% since this project is basically your job, so you already know what you’re doing.

Your contribution post is detailed and I like how you explain points from the current session. You have included all the basic details as well.

Reviewing this contribution was a pleasure! Now if you excuse me, I need to to proofread some of the new files you’ve just finished! But don’t worry, my little friend here will keep you company:
