In simple words, this project brings value to the open source community because it facilitates the creation of all sort of applications using JavaScript, and provides a lot of help and versatility to developers, so much so that well-known companies like Netflix, Paypal, and Uber (among many others) use Node for their online services.

Since Node.js is very easy to learn and it provides a lot of benefits for developers, there is a huge community of people involved with it, which is one of the reasons why this project is available to be translated into several languages (in crowdin, one of the best translation platforms in the web, this project is available to be translated into 33 different languages, Spanish being the one corresponding to this contribution), the ultimate goal in translating Node.js is to make it easier for developers from any country to start learning about this project in their own native language.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is my #36 contribution to Node.js, just after finishing it, I checked the progress of the Spanish team and right now we have translated 32% of the entire project. I worked with the folder named CHANGELOG_V6.md, which is the same I have been translating for the past few weeks, and because it is such an extensive folder, 29% of the strings are yet to be translated.

As its name indicates, this folder serves as a registry for all of the changes belonging to Node.js V6, however, there are several versions inside the general V6, in the following image we can see all of the versions that belong to this folder:

In this particular contribution, I translated strings from version 6.5.0 and 6.6.0. Every single one of these versions is always structured by several sections. Below we can see the different sections of version 6.5.0:

It begins with the title, then there are indications regarding the most important changes, and finally the commits, which are all of the instructions for the changes that correspond to this version, below the title we can sometimes find a few introductory paragraphs providing general information about the version that is just starting, an example of this can be seen in the image below:

The commits sections is always the most extensive one, at least when it comes to the CHANGELOG_V6.md folder, in this section we can find all sort of instructions, like updating documents in order to add new information, fixing typos, adding tests or making them more strict, deprecating elements that should no longer be used, among many other examples. Below I added some of these instructions and its Spanish translation:

When working on this contribution I was able to learn the following concept:

Carriage return: this is practical mechanism that basically indicates the end of a text line and the beginning of a new one, similar to when we use the “Enter” key in our computers, even though its name comes from the old days when people used typewriters and had to physically return the carriage to begin a new line, this is a mechanism that is still in use today. The typewriter mechanism can be seen in the image below.
