Project Details

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a browser... Node.js allows the creation of Web servers and networking tools using JavaScript and a collection of "modules" that handle various core functionality... Node.js represents a "JavaScript everywhere" paradigm, unifying web application development around a single programming language, rather than different languages for server side and client side scripts. | Source

In simple words, this project brings value to the open source community because it facilitates the creation of all sort of applications using JavaScript, and provides a lot of help and versatility to developers, so much so that well-known companies like Netflix, Paypal, and Uber (among many others) use Node for their online services.

Since Node.js is very easy to learn and it provides a lot of benefits for developers, there is a huge community of people involved with it, which is one of the reasons why this project is available to be translated into several languages (in crowdin, one of the best translation platforms in the web, this project is available to be translated into 33 different languages, Spanish is the one corresponding to this contribution), the ultimate goal of translating Node.js is to make it easier for developers from any country to start learning about this project in their own native language.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is my #44 contribution to Node.js, and right now the project is 38% translated into the Spanish language, regarding the folder I have been translating, which is named as CHANGELOG_V6.md, it is 92% completed.

In this particular contribution I translated strings belonging to 2 different versions, the first one was version 6.2.0, I had already started the translation of this version in my previous contribution, but there were a few strings from the commits section that still needed to be translated, once I was done with this version I started with the next one, in this case, it was version 6.1.0. This particular version has a lot of content in the notable changes section, as we can see below:

Since there weren’t too many string in the commit section of this version when comparing it with others that are more extensive, I was able to translate every single one of its string in just 1 contribution, and I was also able to begin with the translation of version 6.0.0, which is probably the version with the highest quantity of notable changes in the entire folder.

However, the majority of the strings I translated for this contribution were, as usual, from the commits sections, the reason why this section is the one with more information is because this is where the instructions for every single change that must be applied to Node.js is registered.

Having these changelogs with detailed and constantly updated information is very important, they allow the developers to see which were the modifications that changed the way this software works, and given the fact Node.js is extremely popular, there are surely a lot of people working to improve it and enhance it.

With the goal of providing the information in an uniform way, the strings from the commits section are always written following the same template, which contains the information to the commit on GitHub, the basic instructions for the change, as well as the name of the person who proposed each change and finally, the link to the merged pull request on GitHub. Every string from the commit section will always have this basic information.

Below I added a few examples of the strings I translated from the commit sections while I was working on this contribution:

English

adjust function argument alignment

Spanish

ajustar alineamiento de argumento de función

English

The <0>worker.exitedAfterDisconnect</0> property replaces <0>worker.suicide</0>

Spanish

La propiedad de <0>worker.exitedAfterDisconnect</0> reemplaza a <0>worker.suicide</0>

English

Reintroduce shared c-ares build support

Spanish

Reintroducir soporte de compilación de c-ares compartido

When working on this contribution I was able to learn the following concept:

Shorthand: when coding, it is always advisable to write the code in the most efficient possible way, shorthand codes is when certain abbreviations are assigned to some expressions or functions, and that makes it possible to write complex instructions using fewer letters and fewer words, therefore, consuming less time and resources. Using shorthands can even allow some people to write code like this:

Hi @dedicatedguy,

Thank you for submitting your contribution!

  • Node.js is a very interesting project that contains many code values and terms related to computer science. Its difficulty relies on the fact that we must pay a lot of attention to the code in order to deliver the most accurate translation possible.

  • Your presentation post follows all the general guidelines. It is very well written and formatted, includes all the basic details, as well as insight of your work as a translator. You also shared useful concepts you learned while working on this contribution.

  • You did a very good job with your translation. The vocabulary you used is correct and you were also careful with code values that should not be translated.

Keep up the good work!
