This post was written bilingually, in English and Chinese. I wrote a tutorial to Typora on steemit months ago only in Chinese. The English part of this post was based on the Chinese tutorial with some updates in the latest version , and the Chinese part of this post only introduced the new updates

Introduction

Markdown is the recommended syntax on Utopian.io and steemit.com. However, many users are not familiar with markdown. Typora is the best markdown editor I have ever seen. With Typora, a new steemian can easily write and edit a post and get to know markdown in a simple way. Months ago I subimtted a serious bug report to Typora team. Later this bug was fixed. I think it is now close to perfect and I would like to recommend this software to all the steemians.

Fundamental use

Most markdown editors have two panels, i.e. an editing panel and a preview panel. Utopian.io and steemit.com are two examples: You write your post in the upper panel, and see how it looks in the lower panel. Such a layout is not friendly to new users, even to old users.

Typora has a single panel and it is a 'What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get' (WYSIWYG) editor. You do not have to memorize markdown syntax. Right click your mouse and the tool bar appears. After choosing the format and move away the cursor, you get what you want. See the following moving figure.

If you don't like the tool bar, you can use hot keys instead. ctrl + i mean italic, ctrl + shift + i inserts an image, and ctrl + k inserts a hyperlink. Hints for other hot keys are shown in the menu bar.

Typora saves your text automatically. You don't have to worry about the web browser crashed or power cut!

It is said that the best length of a Chinese post is 1000 -- 2000 characters. See the right bottom and you can find how many words.

Powerful copy and paste

It is pain to insert a table with markdown. With Typora it is fun. Just prepare your table in a spreadsheet software like Excel, copy-paste it to Typora, and it is done. You can even copy a table from a webpage, paste it to Excel, and copy-paste to Typora. See the following moving pictures.

Another powerful copy-paste feature is hyperlink. If you copy a text with hyperlink, then the hyperlink is automatically added when psted to Typora. If you want to insert a hyperlink to a text, just copy the hyperlink, select your text, and press ctrl + k. See the following pictures.

You can copy-paste some from Typora to other places and convert the text to html or plain text automatically.

Advanced use

In the Theme menu, you can choose your favorite theme.

In the View menu, you can choose Outliine, which shows all levels of the titles and sub-titles, Articles, which shows the previews of all the posts in the current folder, and File Tree, which shows the structure of the folder and files.

Another fun is the modes. Have you ever used a typewriter? In the Typewriter mode, with the hot key of ctrl+shift+t, the cursor is always in the middle height of the editor, which can protect your neck from moving up and down. The Focus mode as well as the full-screen (hot key F11) helps you focus your attention to your writing. You can also switch to the source-code mode with the hot key of ctrl + /, or simply click the left bottom (</>).

I think the tutorial introduced above is sufficient for Steemians and Utopian users. Other features, such as inserting equations, footnotes, table of contents, are available in Typora, although not supported by steemit.com and utopian.io. From the most recent version, Typora supports multiple language interfaces including Chinese, which is shown in the moving pictures in the Chinese part of this post.

Finally and surprisingly, typora is open-source and free of charge on WIndows, Linux and even MacOS! I am sure Typora will improve your posting on Utopian.io and steemit.com.
