Have you read any of e.e. giorgi? Her Mayake chronicles include animals that have been kept alive with steempunk methods. I love her science ficton, YA or adult, crime noir or sci-fi.

I'd not heard of the author or the books, so I've had a look (thank you for the link).
I will admit that science-fiction is not generally my cup of tea, which is why you'll find my steampunk/steempunk posts have a Victorian England flavour (historical fiction rather than the dystopian worlds of the future).
I very much enjoyed reading Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Infernal_Devices
which is a prequel series to her Mortal Instruments series.
