Tutorial: How to send a private message on steemit ---> use #

in #utopian-io7 years ago (edited)

This is a tutorial for keeping your message private

On steemit there still is'nt a privatemessage system. There might be in the future who knows.
On busy.org you can sent a person a message and there is also steemitchat. However alot of people don't use busy or steemitchat.
Most people, if they want someones attention for a message to send to them are going to wallet and send a little amount of sbd or steem to that person and send a memo with it.

This is not an optimal way because this is'nt even close to a private message. Everyone who goes to your or the receivers wallet can see the message in history.

But there is a way to make sure only you and the receiver can see the message (memo).
Just by putting a hashtag before your message.

This is when you send someone a memo without hashtag (#):

result in history:

But when you type a # before your text like on following screenshot, he/she is the only one who can read it:

When you then check the memo's in history of the receiver you wont see your text, it is only visible for him :):

This way you now can contact people on steemit itself and keeping private for other persons checking the wallet of the receiver.

I hope you find this useful! alot people on steemit don't know this trick.

Nice one...Thanks for sharing

Are you sure it's private everywhere? If you query the blockchain directly, won't it be there?

Its not private anywhere, you can just check a persons account and look at everything they send or recieve and to whom the other party is. It is completely public

Soooo... Don't follow this tutorial then, everyone. Sorry.

Ultimately all communications on the internet are public like a blockchain in some sense (just look at shodan) but if you do not want people to know what you are doing you can use RSA cryptography os something similar and then people will not know what you are saying but they will know the approximate length of the message (depending on algorithm used)

It is not your fault, so do not say sorry, the author of this post should have said that to everyone beforehand that this is not actually private (as even memos say that they are public to everyone)

privacy isnt really a thing with steem. for example, you can look at everyone's wallet and every single transaction they ever did.

Hi, I am requesting that you change the title from saying private message to public message. The title is intentionally misleading as the messages are public to everyone unless a third party encryption scheme is used in which case everyone can see the encrypted message.
