After discussion with our dev lead, we finally decided to use Corona SDK to develop the simulation game: mini-steemit.

The Game Design Information is here: Mini-Steemit : A simple simulation game of steemit - Game Design (EN).

The benefits of using Corona SDK are:

  • Lua based: we are familiar with C/C++, so Lua is a fair choice for quick prototyping. Actually we've already evaluated other game engines, like Unity, Cocos, etc., but finally we still choose Corona SDK.
  • 2D: Yep, we only develop 2D games, so it's enough for us.
  • Cross Platform: Easy to deploy to Desktop and Mobile devices, except Web Edition, eg. HTML5. Actually in the roadmap of Corona SDK, it will support HTML5 exporting feature in the Q1 2018. So let's see then.
  • Small Package Size: This aspect is also important for us, we care the size.
  • Call Native Library: Via a plugin, we could call some native (C/C++) libraries.
  • License Free: It's free now, including commercial publication.
  • Documentation: Completed documentation, easy to find proper code samples of APIs.
  • Community/Support: Good community and support, this aspect is also important for developers.

Besides Corona SDK, there are other Lua based game engines we may consider, eg. Love2d, Defold, Gideros, etc.

But for this first game for steemit, we just pick up Corona SDK.

Let's go.
