Added custom configuration guide to official BlockPress wiki

Details

Recently we added custom configuration support to BlockPress, so you can configure your site and not have changes overwritten by upgrades. Yesterday I got around to writing instructions for how to create and configure your local_config.json file, and adding this to the official documentation.

Because I knew we were also changing the names of the official themes, I made this change before writing the documentation, so anyone following the documentation would create future proofed configuration.

The section on content modules is the most detailed, as it is perhaps the most complex part of configuring a site. These objects are used by both the firstpage field and the menu array. They define the module that creates the content and which parameters the module needs to display the right content.

For example, if you want a page to display a list of your steem posts, you will need to select the type as steem, and then pass it an args object with a value of posts for show and your steem account for username. If you want to limit the listing to only posts with a certain tag, and change how many results are returned, you can also define that.

This tutorial will be of use for technically minded web hosts. However, since the configuration file is in JSON format, it should be simple enough to create tools for editing and creating them. We plan to release such tools further down our development path. These tools will make BlockPress more accessible to less technical bloggers that have their own web hosting.

Wiki updates include

4 Revisions to Configuration tutorial

covering:

  • First draft of the configuration tutorial.
  • Spelling and indentation corrections.
  • Added helpful external links.
  • Added some useful links. (To other official wiki pages)

1 Revision to main wiki page, changing some wording and adding the link to the new page.

Components

The official tutorial covers how to create the custom config file, local_config.json, and how to make basic and advanced edits to control the content of your site. It explains how to choose your theme, amend the menu, chose your default content and determine what content loads when each menu item is selected.

Whilst BlockPress is still in alpha, we are near enough to beta launch that a local_config.json set up now will remain compatible.
