Project Details

Node.js is not a programming language but could be considered as a JavaScript programming framework, although in reality, the definition of a framework is not entirely appropriate, as Node.js could be confused with an environment to create a particular type of applications. To be precise, Node.js is a framework/platform for running JavaScript applications
We therefore say that the most appropriate definition would be that of "platform for the execution of JavaScript applications", as we find written on the home page of the official website; in practice, it is a JavaScript run-time, therefore a motor for the execution of JavaScript code.

Introduction

I'm glad that on Node.js I have the chance to start a file from scratch and working to complete its translation: in my previous project instead, there were many files partially translated by other users that had just some scatter word or sentence to render and this sometimes need more time and makes your work unpleasant and confused.
As I have already explained, the whole Italian team is working on Node.js and we are processing all the first folder (API) files, following the descending order as much as possible, to give a better translation.

Contribution Specifications

With my last contribution, I completed the API files, on which my team and I have been working through all these months: therefore in my 20th, I've started the GUIDES file.
I processed five different folders:

  • backporting-to-release-line.md
  • building-node-with-ninja.md
  • mantaining-npm.md
  • maintaining-the-build-files.md
  • node-postmortem-support

I have to say, with my surprise, that this part has been the most challenging so far. There are so many specific functions that I had to pass a large amount of time trying to study their meanings. For that reason, I kept many terms as in the source string, but I made a huge effort in order to understand the whole process and give the best rendering to every sentence.

I had to learn several technical expressions and computer functions though I didn't translate them, because we maintain them in English while translating in our language, like scratch pad that is not just a note pad but also a kind or RAM...

Here some of those words:

  • Cherry Pick
  • Commit
  • Push
  • Rebase
  • Core dump

  • Backport
  • Staging
  • Branch
  • Release Line
  • Check out

Here you can find a guide to use Github (in Italian) in which many of these terms are used; here, where words like staging and branch are used to explain how to develop a web application, and here there are references to cherry-pick and rebase.

Translation Overview

1. How to submit a backport pull request

For the following steps, let's assume that a backport is needed for the v6.x release line. All commands will use the v6.x-staging branch as the target branch. In order to submit a backport pull request to another branch, simply replace that with the staging branch for the targeted release line.Checkout the staging branch for the targeted release line
Make sure that the local staging branch is up to date with the remote
Create a new branch off of the staging branch

2. On how to build the Node.js core, see Building Node.js.

There are three main build files that may be directly run when building Node.js:
configure: A Python 2 script that detects system capabilities and runs GYP. It generates config.gypi which includes parameters used by GYP to create platform-dependent build files. Its output is usually in one of these formats: Makefile, MSbuild, ninja, or XCode project files. (Note: the main Makefile mentioned below is maintained separately by humans). For a detailed guide on this script, see configure.
vcbuild.bat: A Windows Batch Script that locates build tools, provides a subset of the targets available in the Makefile, and a few targets of its own. For a detailed guide on this script, see vcbuild.bat.
Makefile: A Makefile that can be run with GNU Make. It provides a set of targets that build and test the Node.js binary, produce releases and documentation, and interact with the CI to run benchmarks or tests. For a detailed guide on this file, see Makefile.

3. Postmortem Support

Postmortem Support
Postmortem metadata are constants present in the final build which can be used by debuggers and other tools to navigate through internal structures of software when analyzing its memory (either on a running process or a core dump). Node.js provides this metadata in its builds for V8 and Node.js internal structures.

Hi @akireuna!

Congratulations and thank you for another great contribution. Your translation work was excellent and spotless, as usual, and this time you had quite more text to translate, rather that short technicalities. So kudos for that!
The high number of translated words and your excellent work account for a higher than average score.

Congratulations also for having completed all the API files and moving on to the guides.
