2DTanks Update #1

Hi there this is my first update for the game, made a few changes, added some new things and fixed some others.

I'll try to describe everything I did into this new merged update, show you some screenshots and present you what I want to do next, the things that I think that need to be done the most.

Bug Fixes

On the bug fixes part I managed to fix two important things that will make the game more playable

  • On the previous version when a player used to collide with a wall the tank would start shakeing as long as the player was holding the button down towards the wall, now I changed the Update() function with a FixedUpdate() one and it seems to work fine everything is synced.

  • Another fix from the previous version was that sometimes when one of the tanks was shooting the player would somehow kill himself, this was because the spawning point attached to the tank was too close to the tank collider and once the two colliders would touch eachother the player dies. Fixed it by changeing the spawn point further from the tank and made sure the tank will always stay at a certain distance from the turret so it won't kill itself again.

New Features

Now let's get to the part where I share with you what's new.

  • Added new square tiles into the game (@andeladerano 's tiles).
  • Added new tanks for both players (@andeladerano 's tanks since they go well with his tiles).

  • Added 2D colliders for the new walls.
  • Replaced the old rectangle walls with the new tiles to make a greater map (see differences in the screenshots below).

  • Added a basic menu so I can test the game easyer once I try it live on windows, 1vs1 and quit buttons have working functions while the sound and survival are not clickable.

  • Added a few things for the powerups, it haves 5 spawning points spread on the map, the Spawner picks randomly one of the spots and one of the powerups and spawns it at the start of the game, all I need to do now is to figure what powerups should I have in game and make a basic timer to spawn them on certain time.

  • Made the powerups collectible even though they do nothing so far but it's ok to have it done so players won't have them as barriers.

New things to work on (Roadmap)

For the next update I really need to have a background behind all those tiles that blue makes my eyes bleed, add some sounds for shooting and collisions, and start working on a level select menu with credits to all authors that contributed with tanks/tiles. If I get any graphics contribution for the menu buttons I'll add them too.

I don't know how to actually add a pull request below the repository, I commited the updates ~ 1 hour before creating this post and it dosen't show up in the menu below repository. I'll add the one that I can and leave the comparison between commits below.

P.S: After talking with one of the supervisors, I closed the 2D Tank request after 1 week since there were plenty of posts about it.

@ady-was-here, Approve is not my ability, but I can upvote you.

By looking at the repository, I can see only code change is Added a OnCollisionEnter2D function on Both Player1 and Player2 cs files and changed the Update to Fixed Update. Also you have added PowerupSpawner.cs file which is just doing SpawnPower initiation and added a bunch of .png files. If that is the only thing you have done or am I missing anything?

On the coding part the new things on this commit are the buttons functions for the game menu, the FixedUpdate() change where I tryed different ways from the internet to solve the bug but in the end I only needed to change the function's name and the powerup spawner.

On the Unity3D part I had to add each tile manually on the map (and there aren't just a few, I'll add screenshot below, it took me some time to get them as close as possbile to each other and make them look alligned), and after that to test moving between all of them to see where the tank gets stuck and it shouldn't so I moved the tiles left/right/up/down to make a drivable way.

The only big part for coding left is the powerups what each one will do and later on the survival mode, as for the other part the thing that will take me a lot of time is to create each map, place tiles in each one different ways, different places for the powerups spawn.
