Uterine Fibroids Occur in About 40% of Women by the Age of 40

Fibroids are more common in women who are overweight and women of Afro-Caribbean origin. They usually grow slowly during your reproductive years, but may increase in size with pregnancy.

During menopause, fibroids shrink because estrogen levels decline. They are benign growths that form inside the uterus. Pre-menopausal women over the age of 40 years are most susceptible.

They can be single or many. They can be on the surface, in the middle of the muscle, or hang into the cavity of the womb. many can grow as a single growth or in clusters (or groups).

Their size can vary from small, like an apple seed (or less than one inch), to even larger than a grapefruit, or eight inches across or more. they usually increase in size during pregnancy, when progesterone production is high, and atrophy after menopause, when progesterone levels decrease.

Whichever side is right, eating more whole grains and beans usually changes the estrogen/progesterone ratio for the better and shrinks fibroids.

They can grow to such an excessive size that they can be the cause of many abdominal and pelvic complaints about women. They may cause pelvic pressure by pushing on a woman’s bladder or rectum and they may be the source of pain during intercourse.

Fibroids range in size from very small (coin-sized) to larger than a grapefruit. A very large uterine fibroid can cause the uterus to expand to the size of a six or seven-month pregnancy. Fibroids usually grow, but very slowly. The growth is stimulated by hormones, especially estrogen.

Many can change the shape of the uterus as they grow. This can make it difficult to become pregnant or can cause problems during pregnancy. They are very rich in estrogen receptors and may get bigger with BC pills.

The pills can decrease the heaviness of bleeding but not the prolonged bleeding pattern. Fibroids may also contribute to incontinence (urine leakage) or rarely, they may partially block the outflow of the bladder, making it difficult to empty the bladder.

Occasionally, an enlarged uterus may press on other urinary structures resulting in partial blockage of the urine flow from the kidneys.

Fibroids are quite common; they generally affect women between ages 30 and 45 and may shrink or disappear with the onset of menopause. The growths rarely become cancerous, although large ones may narrow the uterine cavity and lead to miscarriage or infertility.

They can block the fallopian tubes and prevent sperm from reaching and fertilizing an egg. After conception, they may impair the ability of the embryo to implant in the uterus. Many can be as small as a pea to as large as a basketball. They are usually round and pinkish in color, and they can grow anywhere inside or on the uterus.

Fibroids can grow between appointments, so it is important to keep regular visits for ongoing management.
