Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed a bill on March 20th. The bill will ban the sale of flavored vape products in Utah.

Senate Bill 61 bans the sale of flavored vape cartridges and disposable vape devices. Specifically, these include flavors such as fruit, candy, desserts, alcoholic beverages, spices or mints. However, mint and tobacco flavors will still be allowed. The ban will take effect on January 1, 2025.

Democratic Sen. Jen Plumb, the bill's sponsor, says the legislation aims to curb the popularity of flavor vapes among youth.

Initially, the bill listed mint flavor as a permitted flavor. But, that was later dropped in a last-minute deal. Plumb says the bill is not intended to put traditional tobacco shops out of business. It’s “If we take away flavors, companies are going to have to change their model.”

However, Republican Senator Todd Weiler opposed it. He argues that the bill would harm the hundreds of traditional tobacco shops that have sprung up in Utah in recent years. Because they are the only places that can sell flavored vape products. Protesters gathered outside the Capitol last month against the bill. The adults protestors say they like the flavored vape products and that they could help them quit more harmful cigarettes.

In addition to banning flavored vape products, the bill also prohibits the sale of any e-cigarette products that have not been authorized by federal officials.
