Welcome to another edition of Aussie slang! We have to keep this one short since we have to run to the shops for some durries!

But a longer post is coming! We hope you enjoy today's! Please feel free to tell us some funny words and phrases that you use or have heard in the comments from other countries or from Oz!

Words are fun, let's share them! <3

Whinge

This is a word that I have come to know very intimately because a lot of people like to have themselves one.

It means to complain, bitch, nag, whine or bemoan, usually in a drawn-out fashion.

The stereotype of a wife following her husband around while complaining about the color of the sky and how loud he is breathing comes to mind.

"Are you going to just stand there and have a whinge?"

Yes. Yes, they are.

Suss

This means that something or someone appears suspect or suspicious.

Good examples are but are not limited to:

  • Counting money outside of a hotel or home of ill-repute
  • Peering into a parked car
  • Wearing a hoodie and sunglasses into a place of business
  • A Thai massage parlor with late hours and red neon signage...

In a sentence: "Stop doing that, it looks suss as!" (as= as fuck/hell)

Put The Wind Up...

To put the wind up something/someone is to "put the fear in them".

Basically, it means to make someone nervous or fearful by a deliberate action.

A driver in the lane next to you isn't paying attention? Swerve at them. That'll put the wind up 'em.

Someone coming at you in a threatening manner that seems suss? Stomp your foot and make yourself appear larger. That'll put the wind up 'em.

Pozzy

This one took a while for me to figure out in context!

A pozzy is a position or spot. Sometimes even used as a hypothetical ranking position. Not unlike putting someone "in their place".

But for the most part, a pozzy is a reference to a physical seat. Be it for dinner, viewing the television, or for watching a sporting event. It actually originates from sporting event seating!

In the event of someone stealing your pozzy, it is socially acceptable to beat them out of it. (I assume.)

As always thank you for reading and we hope you like what we brought to the blockchain today! Please leave your feedback in the comments! We love to hear it!! Stay tuned for Microscopic Mondays, Drones, and silliness!
Much love, @stitchybitch & @sammosk <3

Just came to know about whinge. Thanks.

the English are called POMS and are know to whinge a lot and so they are know as Whinging Poms

I can be quite whingy from time to time but there is no reason to whinge about your post...good one 😉.

This is helpful ... it would be really great to have a comprehensive guide to Aussie slang. I catch on fairly quickly, however, an Aussie friend called me a 'duffa' a few days back ... I think that's a term of endearment, I mean, I think she likes me ;-)

A duffa or a silly duffer is a goofball/dunce/idiota or depending on if there is an arm/shoulder smack/grip involved may well indicate she is interested.. in pointing out how much of a dunderbrain you were being. ;)

P.S she definitely likes you. The correct response is "Nah chu arrre, got a duzza I can 'ave?"

This will engage round 2 of the courtship ritual, whereby she will throw many varied objects from her purse at you. (Some heavy look out). Your part in this is to collect as many valuables as you can in order to decorate the home you will both inhabit.

Sounds like fun. <3

Dying of the laughs here.

hmm, somewhat reminds me of Klingon mating rituals from Star Track The Next Generation ... ;-) I don't recall any hostility, but that in itself could be a sign of interest, from what you're saying ... the shielas are quite a challenge it sounds like ... I appreciate your guidance, if I return from round 2 with most of my body parts still functional, I'll gratefully let you know ... ;-)
