Millenium Discs: The only option for LONG term data storage

The Millenium disc or "m-disc" is an amazing innovation in data storage that, although being around for a few years, has gone largely unnoticed by the majority of computer users. The Millenium disc, having a data longevity rating of 1000+ years, is the same size and shape of a standard Blueray/DVD and is used in disc drives that seem identical to standard disc writer drive, in fact some of you may already own a compatible drive! LG has decided to make all (or nearly all) of their blueray drives Mdisc compatible for the last few years, which makes it even more confusing why it hasn't become more widely known.

The Magic of the Mdisc is the thin "rock-like" layer that can withstand extreme temperatures, UV, magnetism (unlike HDDs) and is immune to data rot. The Mdisc rock layer is "etched" with a special laser in what I'd like to say is reminiscent of ancient peoples chiseling hieroglyphics in stone to last the test of time. The problem with all mediums of data retention is the corruption that happens when the environment slowly weakens the difference between the "zeros and ones." This is called data rot.

According to various charts (that I have not tested myself) unattended data left on a:

hard drive lasts 3 to 5yrs, (cloud storage "refreshes" data to fix this)

optical disc (DVD) lasts 3 to 6 yrs,

Flash Drive lasts 5 to 10 yrs,

Optical disc (Bluray) lasts 5 to 15 yrs,

Magnetic tape lasts 10 to 20 yrs, and "Archive type" BDR lasts 30 to 50 yrs.

Millenium Discs come in standard capacities: 4.7GB DVD, 25 GB and 50GB Blueray, 100GB BDXL

Upon writing this post, a Mdisc blueray burner is less than $100 and the disc prices are approximately as follows: DVD = $3, BD 25GB = $5, BD 50GB = $10, and BDXL 100GB = $18

I would recommend making at least 2 copies of everything you want to save and put them in SEPARATE secure locations! This gives you the best chance of retaining the data for that long. ( don't forget that the disc can still be stolen or snapped in half and that you will most likely forget and leave it somewhere while traveling the stars over the next few hundred years)
