Mechanic Tips on buying a used vehicle.

This is a simple guide on mechanically inspecting a used vehicle before you purchase. In this I will list some things to test and inspect that anyone can do. This is a basic guide so I cannot cover every detail but I will cover the basics. If you have any questions please post in the comments.

UNDER THE HOOD

-Pop hood and inspect engine with a bright flashlight. Look for signs of oil or fluids leaking . (minor oil seepage is normal)

-Visually inspect the engine bay. Check wiring, hoses, belts , battery, radiator and condenser for any defects or damage.

-Check fluids levels and condition. Inspect motor oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid. If fluids are low it may be indicate a possible leak.

-Check oil dipstick and oil cap for engine sludge . Engine sludge can build up inside motor diminishing engine performance and functionality. Engine sludge can have a pudding-like consistency or you may see solid particles in oil.

INTERIOR
-Test doors and windows. Verify switches are working. Check locks are functional. Operate handles inside and outside the vehicle . Fully open and close all doors and windows.

-Test heater and air conditioning system. Operate temp and fan settings. Verify air temp from vents.

-Test radio and entertainment system. Verify antenna, cd/dvd player, controls and speakers are functional.

-Test Seats and seat belts. Inspect seat belts for defects and functionality. Operate seat adjustments and controls.

-Test windshield wipers and mirrors. Operate washer fluid. Check for any chips or cracks in windshield.

-Test lights and turn signals . Verify operation. Visually inspect headlight and taillight housings for moisture or damage.

-Test keys start vehicle and open doors. Pop the trunk. Inspect vehicle has spare tire, jack and tools.

TEST DRIVE
-Start vehicle and listen for abnormal noise from engine. Look for heavy smoke from tailpipe. Any abnormal noises or heavy smoking may indicate major engine defects.

-Check all gauges and observe any service lights on. Verify engine reaches operating temp and does not overheat.

-Listen and feel transmission shifts correctly. Shifting should feel smooth. Hard shifting may be due to low fluid or transmission defect.

-Drive on highway observe if vehicle pulls left or right. Test brakes at all speeds for noise and or a pulsation.

-Drive over bumps in road and listen for any suspension or steering noises. Listen to both sides of the vehicle. Rock vehicle side to side listen to steering and suspension. ( roll down windows)

-Test emergency brake is functional. E-brake should hold vehicle in drive or reverse.

-Check tire condition and inspect wheel wells for signs of rust. Tires with low air pressure can cause a pull and or a light on dash. Visually inspect tire tread for abnormal wear.

FOLLOW UP
-Consider all repair and maintenance costs before making a purchase. Some vehicle repairs may exceed the value of the vehicle and would not be worth buying.

-Be sure to check tire condition. Tires can be a very expensive maintenance cost.

-Be aware of vehicle fuel economy (mpg) especially with trucks.

-Kelley blue book website is a useful tool for vehicle research and pricing.

-Check vehicle insurance cost.
