Baby Condemned To Death By The Courts, Then Trump Shows Up

Despite Charlie Gard’s parents’ efforts to raise enough money to bring little Charlie to the U.S. for experimental life-saving treatment, it seems the European courts have decided his story is destined to end in tragedy, suggesting it’s in the infant’s best interest to die.

However, President Trump decided to step in, and is now making a final plea to help save the child’s life.
According to the Telegraph: US President Donald Trump has made an eleventh-hour intervention in the case of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard by offering help to save him. It comes as Chris Gard and Connie Yates are spending the last days of their 10-month-old son’s life with him, after being given more time before his life-support is turned off. If you’re unfamiliar with the story, little Charlie suffers from a rare condition with which there is no cure: Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, is being cared for at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Charlie’s story has became a hot topic globally, and as a result, has allowed the parents to raise enough money through donations to afford treatment in the United States: Charlie’s plight has touched many people and the family received donations totaling more than £1.3 million to take him to the US for therapy.

But apparently, neither that money nor their plea to brink Charlie to the US for treatment matter. Due to the fact that doctors in the UK can do nothing further for him, the European court system have deemed it most appropriate to go ahead and condemned the child to death: The couple released an emotional video a day earlier saying they had been told Charlie would die on Friday. They said they had been denied their final wish to be able to take their son home to die and felt “let down” after losing their legal fight. The hospital later confirmed it was “putting plans in place for his care”.

While the success of the experimental treatment in the US is anything but guaranteed, it could be the last ditch effort to save Charlie’s life. And President Trump’s support couldn’t have entered the equation at a better time, as it may be just the thing to make the effort happen.

For Charlie’s sake (and his parents’), I sure hope it does.
